Jimmy Smith in San Ignacio in 1964
Jimmy hooked up with a couple of expeditions while in San Ignacio in 1964. Some Americans, on their first trips to Baja, ran into Jimmy in San
Ignacio. Does anyone here have any stories they would like to share?
One expedition, took photos and documented newly found caves in the mountains.
Crosby was saved countless months of research by one of the participants by directing him in the right direction. Jimmy Smiths participation in much
of the happenings in central Baja are being confirmed by this participant of the early gringo ramblings into the caves of mystery.
Are the painted figures of the Great Mural rock art caves celebrating the heavens or the rain that comes from the mountain?
One of the great things about Jimmy was his cross-interests. One photo discovered, has Jimmys truck (lame at the time) being pulled by donkeys! He
could be talking about rock art one moment then turn and rap about the unique aspects of removing a Chevy truck starter!

I have photos taken in 1964 from a member of the expedition that discovered the new caves. It was the same person who then gave Jimmy his nick name
"The Grinning Gargoyle". Coming soon to a web site, near you!

In fact,
Crosby started then by scratch. Luckily, he followed the advise, "Always use local guides", which Crosby later admitted, saved him months of
bush-whacking. And made life-long compadres.
The rush was on to discover the caves of mystery.
Some were "discovered", all were already known by the local ranchers. The new gringos banded together in the adventure of the moment. Jimmy had a
particular way of doing things then. He also had a reason to be in Baja and not in the states. Does anyone know why?

The 'politically correct' answer is that the girls were prettier in San Ignacio... He finally married* one of them!
* She actually gave in, after many years!

I just got my hands on the Desert Mag. stories of Choral Pepper
Thanks you (you know who) does anyone know if it is in fact Dona Lupe in the July '64 issue, page 33? Sure looks like her even all these years
later, and there was a reference eailer in the aritcal about the "Grinning Gargoule" (sp?) Having talked to Choral and Jimmy on different occasions
about that time period I'm really wondering....anybody know for sure?

Jim was there once when we stopped at Leree's in '63 and '64, and not there a couple of other times. Dona Rebecca said he was off flying planes in
'Nam. (Sorry, no tilde on Dona. When I try accents or italics, I make stuff disappear.)
