"Doctor's Point/El Bajo road closed

My favorite place to haul my kayak to fish. An extensive reef here, with deep water to the north. Closest land to Isla Coronado and an easy paddle to there. I've caught roosterfish, pargo, skipjack, triggers, snappers, cabrilla, golden grouper, halibut, giant squid, sierra, and more here.

Luckily we'll have a boat soon 'cause you can't drive there any more. A new fence, chain link topped with barbed wire, crosses the road just before the arches, past La Picazon restaurant.

Who put the fence up and why? At least it is past La Picazon.

I don't know any specifics, but there are always rumors.

But there is a regional management plan, and ALL beachfront from San Bruno north of Loreto to Ensenada Blanca in the south is slated for development. Nothing reserved for the public. So the days of plentiful coastal access for kayaking, beachcombing, camping, swimming are ending very quickly. But if you have a boat...they aren't fencing the sea.

I'll sure hate seeing the old ruins in the photo removed; perhaps Mexico's archeology folks can step in and preserve it. It is the oldest structure in the hemisphere, a primitive Achean temple attributed to Jason and the Argonauts.;D

Don, are you familiar with the San Bruno ruins... the oldest mission-era ruins in California (1683-1685)? Do you know if they will be honored and protected?

Before Loreto, the first attempt by the Jesuits was at San Bruno 15 miles to the north.

David, I have not seen the San Bruno ruins, but I understand they are a ways inland from the beach. They are not marked and there is little left so one really has to hunt for them, or get a guide, I think.

Lots of water runs through there, and with several hurricanes in recent years I don't know what, if anything, may have happened. I've heard that a shifting gully took out the last remains of a mission's foundation at Ligui a few years back.

I am also not sure of just where the hotel and golf course that will be located. They are being built by a Spanish group. Hopefully they will not build on top of the ruins; maybe they can be a feature on the golf course.

What is the domed structure? Is it the reason for the closure?

Some say that was the site of a small failed hotal project built by the owner of the Mission Hotel in Loreto. He was a Doctor, hence the nickname for the location, Doctor's Point. Dr. Arias? I think. The local name, El Bajo, because of the shallow water in the area. Anyway, the domed structure was the lobby building, with another building behind it with rooms, also partially ruined. They say this all happened only 20 years or so ago, but I think those are the same people that say the dinosoars lived 5000 years ago.

I'm sticking to the Jason and the Argonauts theory.

Thanks... yes, they are a short ways inland (to be near fresh water) and on a hilltop... I have not been there myself.

Don:
Doctors Point was started and Stopped much more than 20 years ago.
It was started by Dr. Inog whose Son works with Ivo.
The Dr.'s plan was to bring Water from the Mountains down across the Highway directly to the Point. A landing Strip was built to bring in Pilot Vistors, similiar to the Serindad in Muelge.
I Fished, Dove, collected Bat Guano Fozzils, at the Point for years. Also Investigated an Aircraft Aicident there many years ago when a Plane with a load of Grass attempted a Landing. The DOPERS Hired a Truck, offloaded and got as far as Ensenada before driving off a Cliff.

It is one of my Past Favorite Spots near Loreto.
