Found on a Zihuatanejo board

This is a post from another Mexico website. I agree with the general tone, not every detail.

"We have met the enemy and we is them. Or something like that. We see a lot of postings on this Board (and elsewhere) about development, crime, displacement of native peoples, destruction of cultures, etc. And we critisize them openly.

Most of these issues are caused by us-the affluent Gringos. The crime wave is caused by drug running and guess to whom? Overpopulation of beach areas is caused by whom? Development of La Barra comes from where?

Can we stop it? Sure, all Gringos stop going to these areas. First, that will destroy the economies. Second, eliminate this Board so Gringos aren't constantly bombarded with how great the area is and "come on down". Third, ain't gonna happen. Fourth, am I suggesting I support doing these things, NO WAY, but just trying to point out the facts as I see them.
s/A frequent and appreciative reader of this Board and long time (8 yr) visitor to the area. Not looking for a flame, just gray matter exercise."

You seem to be equating someone moving into a Mexican home with someone building a massive subdivision. On the grounds of nationality? Or maybe race?

I have been outspoken about much of the development, planned and underway, in the Loreto area. Yet I do not think that makes me an opponent of development, and possible improvements for the economies of local residents. And I don't think it makes me a hypocrite, because I chose to live in Mexico.

Because one is critical of a development plan that earmarks ALL beachfront property to private development, that does not make one anti-development.

Because one is critical of a massive 6,000 home development adjacent to a rural town of only 12,000 people does not make one anti-development.

I for one think that many who have moved here have had a positive and beneficial impact on the community. And I believe there are others whose efforts to bring about massive change will have a detrimental impact. There are differences beyond both being "gringos."

Are you laughing at "commies" or with them?

I totally agree with Don Alley. The influx of Foreigners to Loreto that are sensitive to the customs and ways of the Mexicans should actually help the area. However, the huge project (like Loreto Bay) puts too much pressure on the resources of the area. Most important is to respect the Mexican population. Many Americans seem to confuse the Mexicans living in Mexico with gangs in Los Angeles and other stereotypes here in the States. I have found the Mexican people to be gracious and friendly. They are hard working and live a hard life just to make ends meet. One must live in Mexico for several years to learn that the Mexican population thinks much differently than do the Americans. The hustle and bustle of our society is nothing they wish to participate in. I think because of this they tend to live longer than we do. Family is very important to them. It does seem that wherever we Americans go, we want to change things to be more like the U.S.
