Buy new

For a little more than you would pay for a used laptop, you can pick up a new Dell or Gateway. $650 +. It's worth it.

And from what I have heard, stay away from Vista....for now.

CasaManzana, now Grover has a good site but let me turn you on to a site that is run by law enforcement with resales. If they say sometime is good or better it is in great shape and runs. They sell things that they have arrested people for crimes which they have property that they can not find the owners and thus the sale. You bid online for them and I have bought 2 computers, 3 bikes, night vision scope, etc. You name it and they sell it. I bought a digital camera that was still in the box, so I guess the store or warehouse that they stole it from had a bunch. The monies go back to the agency selling the stuff and allows them to do more things in fighting crime. Thus, everybody wins. I bought a Dell laptop for $210 dollars that I had been pricing at about $800, bought a canondale bike for $65 dollars and shipping was $25 but who cares as it would have cost me about $350 elsewhere. Take a look at stealitback.com see what they have to offer. Like all things sometimes people get stupid and bid things up but there is so much it does not matter as you will find the same or like item listed again that day or the next and then buy it. You decide what you want to buy and you can bid up to a minute before it closes. I always bid a little more as offer are in $2 dollars and sometimes $5 dollars bids, so if you bid $12 more and the next person has bid it up $4 dollars you get it for $6 more instead as you had a $12 padding. Take a look and see what it has to offer and remember it law enforcement so you do not get taken and they tell you right out if the product is good or not. Later-----bajafun777

Vista ! Bah Humbug !

Therein lies the problem when buying a NEW Laptop. The options are extremely limited if you don't want one with The Vista O.S.

In February, I bought and setup a New Laptop for a friend and former customer. I quickly learned to Dislike the new O.S. While there are functional improvements over XP (mainly security), the overall package is a bloated beast with all sorts of "Gadgets" and other non-essential add-ons. As a result, the system takes double the time to boot. One of the "improvements" is their "Sleep Mode", but it appears they improved that because of the long boot time, figuring that most customers will leave the system up all day long. Because of the Bloat, the Gurus warn that you need 1GB RAM to get satisfactory service. I'd go beyond that. I found on the initial boot that the O.S. and additional "startup" programs were using over 700MB. After shutting down a lot of those programs, I got the system down to 568MB.

In their system tests PC World noted that, although Vista Multitasks better, it actually runs most individual programs slower than XP.

The only used computer I would consider buying would be an iBook G3 or G4, and it would have to be a distress sale from somebody I know. Or how about an old PC laptop for under $100 and then put in some cheap memory and a Linux OS, so I could have a workable laptop computer for under $200? But I would have to have my geek brother help me with that - He knows more about that sort of thing than I do. Otherwise, I would by a new PC laptop for $500. http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/HP-Pavilion-15-4-Widescreen-N...

just checked the Gateway site: www.gateway.com

Looks like you can call customer support and order a laptop with a Windows XP system.

You will not get much for 150. Beware cheap units.

Many thanks for the input Nomadders....

.......thanks very much to all. I'm all set and it passed a test drive last night and did fine. FYI- this 'puter is going out to the new Ray's Place. Remember the restaurant Ray's Place that burned to the ground at Santicpac, well the new one will be open in a few weeks. I'll be posting a few pix here when it does.
