Artifact Scam in san ignacio

Be on the lookout for this scam....

this stunning stone carving was shown to me by a fellow from San Ignacio...this carving was found in an ancient cave near san ignacioand was very old and valuable...and there are more figures too...I saw a neat indian figure too...his story was that he had sold it for only $5,000 (that's gringo dollars) to an american who didn't show up to buy it so our "amigo" wanted us to lend him some money and he would leave the carving with us in hopes someone might see it and buy it...he could drop the price to only $3,000 and wanted us to lend him a hundred bucks...uh huh...well I must say I LOVED this statue...she is absolutely gorgeous and I dreamed of having her on our wall outside...actually considering giving the guy the hundred in hopes he wouldn't come back for it...well I took some pictures of it and a few days later an old friend from san ignacio was here and saw the pictures and said Oh I see you have seen some of my amigos carvings! Say What??? Yep, there is a man in san ignacio doing these carvings, which are very beautiful to be sure...but I doubt he gets thousands for them and they certainly aren't artifacts...so buyer beware! I hope to visit hiim one day and ask him what his work goes for...he's very talented. Maybe someone in san ignacio knows this fellow?

That is a beautiful carving, I would love to have one, can't say I would pay $5,000 for it, but then again, I don't have $5,000 to spend;)

Well for sure it is a very lovely carving Shari! I would also be willing to purchase a peice of art such as this for my home/yard! But certainly NOT for his asking price.Too bad he doesn't just market his talent and price it as it should be! Probably could make some dinero if he did! Good on ya for being cautious. If it quacks like a duck, but doesn't walk like a duck...hmmm.?:smug:

Who would believe that ancient Baja Indians worshipped mermaids?

I saw him last March down by the square hawking his carvings. Some very nice... but price was a couple hundred dollars.

By the way Shari. Stopped by your place in March on my way to Mallarimo on an ATV (quad) but you were apparently in Loreto to pick up a boat. See you next time.

To me it reminds me of the figure in the small fountain in the outside bar at the Hotel Mision...anyone have a picture of that?

It was not the artist who tried to sell it but another scammer who I imagine told the artist he could sell them for him and made up the story. I look forward to meeting the artist and finding out just how much the lady really costs....She has separate feet so isn't a mermaid I don't think although does look like one. Interesting scam I thought and could just fool someone especially with some story about having a buyer for 5 grand but would let it go for 3....he also was willing to trade a car for it!
