Can I get boat permit for non-registered boat???
We're buying a small boat with no title which we'd love to take to Baja. Is it possible to get a boat permit for a boat that is not registered in the
States????

Why not simply register the boat in your resident state ? Even in California, it's pretty cheap and helps to avoid Gray areas. Although it's
probably gone up, when I registered a Portaboat I'd had for a number of years, it was only ten bucks.
As far as legality in Baja, I was told by the Mexican Authorities that my boats had to show "Current" Registrations. Since I did have the new
stickers with me, I wasn't cited so I tend to believe what they said.

$10 for two years in California. Couldn't be easier. You will have to go to the Verification lane at DMV if it does not have any numbers or if it
hasn't been previouly registered. Very simple. Really. Check the information line at your local DMV for requirements.
No boat permit required if not fishing, correct?
That is the issues the Kayakers have with fishing out of their boats, no registration on them so they can't get the boat permit for Mexico...
Haven't had a bad trip yet....

I'd love to register it in our home state, but boat has no title and registration and it's looking like a major amount of redtape to get it (we're
trying)
I was hoping to just be able to get boat permit without having to go through all the trouble.
Is it possible (for an out of state person) to register a boat in California if I don't have title or other papers????

On how you obtained the boat...........
Check with either your DMV or Fish & Game office (whomever titles and registers boats in your state) . Maybe they have a form called "Statement of
Facts" that will allow you to claim ownership.........or go to who(m) you purchased the boat from and get A BILL OF SALE (read between the
lines....thats why the print is so big).
Most "real" boats have the HIN (Hull Identification Number) stamped into the transom. That's the flat part where the motor bolts on. That's what needs
to be inspected. They will run it for stolen and probably do a 50 state registration check.....then you go from there.
Or pay a little more and buy a boat that has the correct paperwork, save all the hassles.

When we pulled our boat down, at the border, they asked to see the registration and checked it against the number on the boat. I got my Mexican permit
through Vagabundos.

yep, had the jet ski's checked too. I make sure anything I transport across the border is in my name and my name only, unless the person I'm hauling
for is either sitting next to me or in the vehicle behind me. Had too many problemas over the years without the registration being perfect.
Haven't had a bad trip yet....
