San Filipe raffle
015, Nice report, great site work so far. Your report/cop run in reminds me of a trip to San Filipe.
Just me and pal (his first trip to Baja) and my pickup pull into San Filipe where we find the road blocked by a city cop in a city cop car with his
doors open situated so we just about have to pull over and stop. He walks up to my door and hands me a piece of paper. It was faded, torn, dogeared
-- just barely readable. At the top was the City Seal. Neatly typed the paper said "The City of San Filipe is having a raffle. You could win a
Brand New Ford Wheel Drive Pickup truck. Thank you." My pal asked me what it said and I handed it to him to read. He said "What are you gonna do?"
I said "I'm gonna give him 2 bucks, I suggest you do the same." We gave him the money, he walked back to his car without even a smile, closed the
doors so we could move on. Couple of blocks later my pal, Bob, says "Hey, how we gonna win? We have no tickets!"
I said "there is no raffle, no tickets."
"Then why did we give him the money?"
I said "We're gonna be here on the beach for 2 glorious days. He knows us, he knows our truck. Who knows what jackpots we might get into? We just
bought a cheap 2 dollar insurance policy."

I have pulled our South Campos police out of the sand several times when they were stuck near BSM, provided gas for their trucks and hired them to
provide security for Community Center events. In turn they have gone out of their way to repay the favors. Our delagado, Luis Romero has made it clear
that we are not to give them any money other than when we hire them. Given the same circumstances in SF, I would have given up the $2.

Rob, we were down this past weekend and headed back this weekend. All looks good with both ends of camp. Your rooftop antenna has fallen though, but
no damage to panels.

Thanks Chuck. Jim next door had let me know that a guy wire failed due to corrosion. This time I bought plastic coated guy wire. Hope it lasts. We
were lucky that we didn't lose some solar panels. Caryn wrote yesterday that it was 127f on the beach. Yikes. You guys are tough.

Rob,
127f on the beach? Her thermometer must have been directly in the sun! It was hot last weekend but not that hot, besides, we spent a lot of time in
the water which is 87f and very nice and on the jet ski's in the lagoon with nice high tides.
Having a lot of fans help too when we're in the house. We're bringing a big load of lumber this trip for the interior walls on the new house, we'll
have to lean them on the deck after unloading them then pull them up into the house, we might wait till dark to do that!
Back to the original post, sounds like the ol' Policeman's Ball routine.

The $2 was absolutely worth it in that case. Police in Mexico are severely underpaid. Later on in my trip (day 6) a police officer came up to my
campsite in Loreto with a similar piece of paper asking for donations for a policeman's ball. I was happy to contribute. In a way I felt bad for the
police officer. They shouldn't have to ask for money like that.

Boy...
...I'd be one of the first to give a hand when needed, but I have to say I hate being 'conned' like that with a 'road block' for 'donations' to some
'worthy' cause!
It's not the small amount of money involved, I , like probably everyone here have come up with some much needed help or $'s when there's a genuine
need...I just don't like the 'bite' to be put on me in the manner told above.
I've driven on the mainland several times, and once we were the victims of a large traffic jam on a narrow bridge near a small village...'wreck' we
wondered, till we got nearer to find a couple of town's people with 'donation' tins in the middle of the bridge stopping every vehicle, in both
directions to apply the 'bite' for some village event !
I for the life of me couldn't figure why these people would cause travelers such a delay - and then expect a 'donation'! Sorry, as visitors, we
support Mexico's tourist economy in many generous ways, but that wasn't one of them!
Call me a son of a b-tch if you wish, but that cop's 'low paying' job is not my responsibility! If he's stuck on the road and needs some assistance,
I'm right there to help, but 'extortion', even in small batches is still 'extortion'!
