Police reacted quickly

The 67-year-old was kidnapped in Rosarito, near Mexican city of Tijuana, while having lunch with his family in restaurant.

Kidnappers freed Basque businessman Jose Maria Sanchez on Tuesday, three days after he was abducted by armed men from a seaside restaurant in the Mexican resort town of Puerto Nuevo in Rosarito.

The 67-year-old was kidnapped in Rosarito, near Mexican city of Tijuana, while having lunch with his family in restaurant.

Another Mexican citizen was kidnapped and four others injured when the gunmen opened fire while kidnapping Sanchez.

Sanchez was found wandering along a highway outside of Tijuana on Tuesday, his hands still bound and his eyes blindfolded, Tijuana police chief Victor Manuel Zatarain said.

The police had reacted fast and launched a huge search operation to find Sanchez when the kidnap was reported, police officials said.

"We immediately began a rather big search operation in which more than 20 units took part. I feel this is what brought the kidnappers under pressure and they released him. That is why we found him in these conditions. Usually they do not set the kidnapped free this way," Zatarain said.

Sanchez appeared to have been beaten by his captors, and received medical attention at police headquarters in Tijuana. Hours later, he was turned over to his family on the US border of San Ysidro.

Police would not say whether Sanchez paid a ransom, but they attributed his safe release to intense international media coverage of his kidnapping and pressure from the US and Spanish governments.

Sanchez was visiting family members in the US, and had crossed over into Mexico to spend a day as part of his vacation.

It was unclear what had happened to the other unidentified man kidnapped along with Sanchez. Police have not as yet divulged any information on him
