Baja 1000 Course Map

Just read Minnow's informative post about avoiding Mex 1 on Nov. 13-15. If you are traveling on Mex 1 on those dates not only will support teams be "racing" south with their cars and bikes, but the race couse will cross and run ON several sections of the Hwy. The race rules state that drivers must not exceed 60 mph while on the hwy, however when you mix race machines, RVs, trucks, cars, cows, etc...it may be safer and more fun to sit and watch the race go by, rather than drive those days if you can avoid it.

Here is a map of the race course which is 1296 miles long this year and goes from Ensenada to Cabo, it's the 40th anniversary race. Here is a link to the SCORE site with all the maps and information about the race: http://www.score-international.com/baja1000/index.ihtml

Martyman,
You won't be in the way, but there will still be some pre-race related traffic on the highway. It will go right past your house in Bahia on Tues. Nov. 13th, from mid/late afternoon all through the night and into the next day. Make sure that you have EVERYTHING you might need from town, as you will not be able to get back and forth via the road once the bikes start coming through and until the last of the rhinos come through on Wed. (if they make it that far).

As you can tell from these photos from last year's 1000, the majority of the racers will come through Bahia and by your house well into the evening.

The race begins Tue, the 13th and the fastest bikes will be in your area (Race Mile 519) around 2-3 pm and the Trophy Trucks and all the rest perhaps from 5pm or later and on for the following 24 hours, mas o menos... So if you don't want any race run ins, avoid the roads used the afternoon of the 13th to the 14th, IMO.. That would be the paved road into town and the graded road south to Hwy. 1, north of San Ignacio.

Uh oh, I'm planning to drive south to Los Barriles on Nov 13th, crossing at San Ysidro about 7am. Gotta mess with customs and pay some duty, I expect to hit Ensenada by about 8:30 - 9:00am. Will that be a big mess getting through Ensenada? Looking at the route that would seem like the only problem area, I'm just planning to get to GN that evening.

I can't figure out the schedule on their website, those sections are blank.

I guess I could delay until the 14th, but of course I sure don't like delaying a baja trip, even by one day!

Thanks for any input,

Jeff

The 13th will be a mess. From my experience in previous years the hwy will have a lot of traffic and be dangerous.

Race starts on the 13th, concludes on the 14th.

Last year GN was packed as was San Ignacio

Yes... the race heads east along Hwy. 3, but chase crews, pit personal and spectators following the race will be sharing Hwy. 1 all the way to Cabo... The 14th would be better if you don't want to experience that excitement and crowds (at checkpoints and gas stations).

Thanks for the info, it sounds like a day's delay might be a good plan. And maybe a hotel reservation for GN...

Don't forget Nov 20th is dia de los revoluciones which includes parades and blocked roads in most pueblos starting about 8-9am.
