Carl Yaztremski will be signing Edward Wassermans book because he's too timid to sign it himself.

So there are tools to block spam, to block certain email addresses, block callers on your cell-phone, parental controls to block inappropriate content, etc. They are great tools. People don't have to use them if they don't want to, but it is a wonderful option for some members.

I personally don't read posts of some members who spew only hatred and confrontation. I have also wondered why the moderators ignore repeated offenders of board rules, while they summarily block others for what seems to be less global offenses.

Yes, that is something I have noticed (a lot)!:light: But, the world isn't a fair place, so why should Nomad be any different? I think they would keep more people (specially mature people) here if they didn't allow the hate posts to stay.

The other forum I read is a "Vbulletin" based bulletin board and it does have a feature that allows users to set up an "ignore posts" list in their own control panel. This feature is called an "Ignore List" on their site.

You click on the member's name and next to their bio is the option to "add user to your ignore list". Posts made by that person will no longer come up on your version of the forum but it will not impact anyone elses viewing.
I've never felt the need to "ignore" anyone on the other site so I don't know how much it impacts the flow of a thread to block out posts.

Don't know if I'd use the feature if it was available on Nomad. But, it might cut down on headaches from doing this :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

I use the "avert my eyes" feature and it really works well. I really haven't seen anything I didn't want, on some level (kind of like a car wreck), to see.:light:

If you are not yet a grumpy old man then reading their posts can be educational and maybe help prevent you from becoming one.
I am personally working very hard on preventative measures and not making much progress.
I must add though that I have no problems with TRUTH which seems to be something many cannot deal with these days. If what seems to be a nasty post is truthful I welcome it.

There are few individuals that are in the "summarily block" category.

The goal is to keep people participating, not kick them off the board. Certain individuals when proposed with a choice however, have made the decision for themselves to not participate further - and they are held to their word (within the technical abilities we have here to do so).

The key piece of what you wrote is this phrase: "what seems to be".... and my reminder to you is things are not always as they seem... and in these instances, I'd say without exception that this is absolutely the case.

This is pure crap. What this wimpy jerk is saying is that a strong vocal representation of an idea will drown out an intimidated responder resulting in a "less robust sphere of expression."
Perhaps the responder should grow a pair.......vocal chords that is.

Calling someone a "wimpy jerk" is tolerated, so what is next?

If we had a member view filter:

The off-topic forum would be a whole different place. The cyber-bully factor would virtually evaporate. Would the number of people who block a particular member show up on the Stats sections? If I were blocked from many member's view, how would I announce that I have changed my ways and will no longer be a troll?

And, if we were required to have a camera on our computer showing us live and in action, all the nonsense would stop. Anonymity invites anti-social behavior.
