Bahia Tortuga

Does anyone know if the abalone canning plant is still operating? We bought abs from a panga while on the hook in the bay for $8 per kilo.

Wow,
What a deal! Something tells me that he shouldn't have been selling them.

oh yeah, totally illegal and it's a federal offense up there with narcotics...fishermen aren't supposed to sell off a panga...it's a coop you see...which means a single guy can't make a profit...all for one and one for all type deal. Lots of people don't realize that getting caught with illegal abs is a very very serious charge...could get your boat confiscated and end up in jail real fast!!! the cannery is operating.

Thanks Shari, the year was 1991 and we learned of the co-op after the fact. The guy in another panga that sold us 12 -2 pound lobster tails for $25 was probably just as guilty. We combined the bugs and the abs for the best meal on the water ever.
