BAJA CACTUS MOTEL- WiFi hotspot update

You may recall that the Baja Cactus Motel in El Rosario has offered to be your traveling "WiFi Hotspot" even if you are not staying there. All you need is some sort of proof that you are a registered Baja Nomad-er. The administrator, Doug Means, offered the idea of a 'membership card', which you can print out from here-
http://www.bajanomad.com/club/card.htm
Well I put this to a test Tuesday as I was passing by the motel about noon, way too early to stop for the night sorry to say. I had my printed out membership card on heavy card stock and offered it to the receptionist. They had not seen this or heard about this card before, but they quickly connected me to Antonio by phone. He enlightened the staff and they quickly registered me for the hotspot usage. Antonio seemed delighted I was taking them up on the offer to use the service. I think I can claim to be the first registered Baja Cactus Motel WiFi 'non-guest' user. Ya gotta love this place!
BTW- had a great lunch at the Baja Best Cafe at the very south of town...clean/cheap/nice folks and yummy. I've had my last "Mama's-you-know-who-Crappy-Meal".

I have had 6 friends who in the last two years have gotten seriously sick with intestinal disturbance, two of who went to the doctor in Santa Rosalia from eating and Mama you know who and yet there are lots of other reports on here where they talk of really great meals. I don't know if the problem is refrigeration or what but it seems to me there must be some kiind of a problem.
But back to the Wi-Fi, that is great that one could check e-mails or make a contact and not have to go in and use an internet cafe while on the road. Hats off to Antonio. :):):)

The One...!!!

Hello my friends...!!!

Casa Manzana... Indeed you are quite right... you were the first one to stop by and request a courtesy BajaNomad's WiFi HotSpot access.

And again you were right, I had not told my staff yet for one simple reason... the next day I announce here about this service, one of my employees accidentally damage our external WiFi antenna, leaving only our small backup antenna in function, which has a very small range... it only covers the lobby and surrounding areas (every room has inside wired installation)... so I was hoping that if anyone stopped by I was contacted by radio... and I was.

Yesterday I went to El Rosario and fixed the outside antenna and informed everyone in my staff about this service. We are ready now!!!... let me tell you that this external WiFi transmission system is quite powerful... it has an US made amplified transmitter, designed to be used in the Gulf War and for rugged use... found it on the Internet in a surplus store last year.

As a result our WiFi signal covers a very huge area, the only problem is that laptops have very little power to transmit back the signal, and therefore, is actually the laptop itself the one that limits the covered area.

Now... this WiFi signal is not encrypted... is wide open and it's name (SSID) is "BajaCactus HotSpot".

Anyone can connect to this signal without any username or password, everyone is welcome at BajaCactus...jejeje. However, once connected to our network, you will not be able to browse the Internet nor use any services that require Internet access, unless you provide a Username and Password, that your web browser will ask for the first time you try to browse the Internet.

The Username and Password are the ones that will be given upon request at the BajaCactus Motel lobby... it is a free two hour account once activated... if you need another one just ask for it...if not used within 3 days it will expire.

The only requirement is that your sign and put your BajaNomad nickname in our copy of the receipt, so my staff is not charged that ticket.

There are a couple of websites that you can access without any password or username... among these is the BajaNomad's forum and the BajaCactus website (currently under development). So, if you just want to read or post something on this board, you do not even need to get off the car.

Thank you Pescador for your compliments and CasaManzana... thank you so much for stopping by, you are now the Number One!!!

Hugs to everyone....

BajaCactus

Mama Espinoza is a wonderful human being and worthy of much respect, but she has not been in charge of the restaurant for a number of years and those who have have been a real let down.

Antonio is my nominee for El Rosario's Citizen of the year or #2 all time greatest. Viva Baja Cactus!

With respect to laptop WiFi transmission ranges, I can't speak for the many brands of Windows machines, but I've got a Mac iBook with WiFi and I've been able to connect, 2 way, to a hotel network that is 1485 feet away, measured by my GPS. That's shooting through my 6 inch house wall and several walls of the hotel. I've been extremely pleased with the Mac making WiFi connections to hot spots I can't even identify where they are. Something to consider for road warriors seeking out open hot spots from unknown sources. BTW, you can get a WiFi signal detector that will light up red, yellow and green LEDs to tell you when you are in range of a hot spot and how strong the signal is. $35 or so.

Wow, that one is fancier than the one I bought and half the price. Looks like another Christmas gift added to my own list.
