That's a shame, If you're not safe in your own home it's time to move. I had a friend who's father had a water front home there in the early 70's I think it was about $55,000. We used to go there alot great surf spot.

I've been surfing and enjoying northern Baja since 1981. It's not the same now- but what is?

I love having my dogs answer the bell on the gate....My stafford shire terrier along with my giant Zaragoza White Tip (hey they said he was a mexican purebred streetdog....:yes) meet the guest first.....

there is not a "safe" place ANYWHERE in all honesty...however....whenever I am in the US I am terrified and feel safe and snug here in Loreto.....
I do not even lock my door....and sleep with it open....however I have a 80 lb. stafford shire that sleeps under my bed and Elbis Presley (the big boy) sleeps by the LOCKED fence......no problemo'
Life is grand....

" If you're not safe in your own home it's time to move"

Or you can take action to bring safety to your neighborhood. Organize "neighborhood watch" - have meetings, get to know each other. Have the police attend the meetings and inform you of security issues. Offer security inspections - learn about gadgets for windows, doors, locks, screens, bars. Bars can be pretty with planters, nice design, custom made. Clean up graffitti; private security at night? Here's a nice small business for someone: hire out guard dogs. Station them throughout the neighborhood at night; collect them in the morning.

I built a safe home from the ground up- no windows on the first floor. Putting bars on all the windows would just make me feel like I'm the bad guy in a cage. Even so, my neighbors all say the same thing- "We feel like prisoners in our own homes" and to be honest- I don't leave the house much either (unless it's to walk the dogs or hit the hillsides on my dirt bike to play). It's a shame. I'll bet we are not alone and restaurant business would get a bump if just us locals would eat out once a week.

Have there been any follow up stories in the Mexican or U.S. Press regarding this murder? Any suspects? Speculation on motive? These things are rarely random. There must be some connection between the perp and the victim. I didn't know the guy so I have no idea about his personal habits, but this sure sounds like a drug deal gone bad or some kind of vendetta; either drug related or bad family/relationship blood.

For every act of violence where the motive gets confirmed, the rest of us can be fairly well assured that "it won't happen to me because I am not involved in drugs".

There's been no more news, as far as I can tell. But there were some very weird reader's comments about all this in the SD Onion below the original article. One person, who claimed the victim was his/her uncle said, "This man was my uncle. He was gentle and kind. He had his quirks but he didn't deserve to die like this."

Then somebody else posted, "Out of respect for the family I do not want to go into details , I am sure there are some of you reading this that can confirm what I am saying BUT I CAN TELL YOU 100% THAT THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPENED ONE DAY NO MATTER WHERE HE LIVED."

I still don't quite understand how others can make light of this. Is it out of nervousness? A man has passed into eternity by means of murder, real serious stuff

Huh? A subtle smear campaign against someone you know nothing about. Typical- blame the victim with thinly disguised contempt. An older man was found stabbed to death in a doorway. That's all we know- found stabbed to death in a doorway. No one has said where he was stabbed, if he was crawling back into the house and only made it to the doorway, we know nothing. One nomad even posted that he knew the man and liked him.

The authorities on both side of the border must have some background on this guy. Strange, he's seemed to have disappeared off the screen except for some innuendos.

There has been no "official" report that I know of. Police conducting the investigation seemed to rule out any involvement with drugs or a burglary interrupted based on comments overheard and the neighbors who were questioned during the crime scene investigation.

It seems to be the consensus that Ken knew his killer. The real story may or may not prove to be different. Whatever the reasons or motivation, his death remains a tragic event...

Wasn't a random act? Why not? Does murder have to be commited by rational people?

I agree with Tony that it probably wasn't a random act and there was cause and effect. I hope the case is quickly solved. That would be best for all and everything. The random act explaination will serve to fan the flames of the lawlessness characterazation of Baja.
On the other hand, if it was a random act, that characterization is alive and fortified. The world deserves the full truth even though the apologists are already mounting a defense saying the truth is slanderous and these things happen in Chicago as well.
Can't wait to see how this plays out.

I read some comments below the story on the above link fulano provided. The victims neice said he could be difficult at times, but was sweet and gentle. She was upset with other posters saying that it would have happened to her uncle "any where he went". I don't know what that means either but if she thinks she is going to find comfort on a blog- she'd going to be disappointed.

Please don't call my post a "smear campaign". If you can read, my post said I don't know the victim. I am NOT blaming the victim. I am asking questions that haven't been answered.

There must be a motive. Motives can be harbored by psychopaths and the victim may have no culpability. That is what is scary. It there is no motive, then you and I and everyone else are potential victims of a random killer on the loose., With no further news ( and why not?), we are left to try and sort it out based on recognizable patterns in other like crimes.

In my opinion this was not random. But again, I don't know.

If you know, then enlighten us. What is your emotional connection to this particular victim? Do you think it was random?

I have no interest in participating in a "smear campaign", subtle or otherwise. I have no "contempt" and no agenda. Quite the opposite. I have compassion. My conjecture is dispassionate precisely because I don't know him. But like one of his alleged relatives said in replies to The San Diego Union article, "no one deserves to die like that".
