Obituary for Long Time Baja Resident.
I don't know if anyone here knew Dr. Jones. He was a long time seasonal resident of San Felipe. He was a pilot and veterinarian. Here's his obituary
from the Sacramento Bee:
JONES, Francis P., DVM
Born March 16, 1917 in Escondido, CA, passed away January 31, 2009 at home in Wilton, CA. Survived by MaryEllen, his wife of 67 years; sons, Michael
and Gregory, daughter Cathyrn Glacken, their spouses, five grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Raised in Escondido, where his parents had a
mercantile store on Grand Avenue until the Depression, and a dairy at the family ranch in Eden Valley. Francis attended Oceanside-Carlsbad Jr.
College, A&M College of Texas, and graduated from State College of Washington, now WSC, with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1942. Francis and
MaryEllen married in 1942 in Moscow, ID.They made their home in Escondido from 1943 until 1964, when they moved to Sacramento. Francis served in the
Army during both WWII and Korea, was in the Veterinary Food Inspection Detachment, and participated in the atomic bomb testing done at Desert Rock.
Francis was a veterinarian for the State of California, Department of Food and Agriculture Bureau of Animal Health for over 30 years. He worked as a
field veterinarian in Southern California until transferring to Sacramento in 1964, and retired in 1983. He worked extensively on control of
tuberculosis and brucellosis. Francis was active many years in Escondido with 4-H and Scouting, and as a search pilot and officer with Civil Air
Patrol while in Sacramento. During retirement, Francis and MaryEllen enjoyed spending winters with friends and family at their second home in Baja.
The family invites friends to a celebration of life at 11:00am on Saturday, February 21, 2009 at 9599 Jeffcott Road, Wilton, CA. In lieu of flowers,
donations may be made to the Mercy Hospice Foundation.
