What would be great from you Baja residence Nomads: Pesos per litre and the exchange rate at that station (13.50:1 for example).

Litres divided by 3.785 = gallons and Pesos divided by exchange rate = dollars. (I think I got that right? LOL)

Is there still a different price within 20 km. of the border?

Really miss Baja Cactus' monthly posts with all this!

I would think that given the wide range of exchange rates from station to station, the simplest thing would be to pay only in Pesos for fuel.

Sure, but the reason to post the price here on Nomad is for the vast numbers of us who don't live there to know what the price is.. compared to what we are paying, up here. Regular unleaded is around $2.17 to $2.27+/ gallon in my area, now.

Also if you Mexico residents post the exchange rate for the station... we can know what station is acting 'more fair' with only making money on the gas and not money exchange.

In Primo Tapia the exchange rate is 13-1. So the cost in dollars is around $2.15.

7.38 pesos per litre? Magna...

7.38 X 3.785 = 27.95 pesos per gallon

27.95 divided by 13 = US$2.15 (per gallon).

If the exchange rate was 14: 1, then US$2.00/gallon

If the exchange rate was 15:1, then US$1.86/gallon

Sounds like Gypsy Jan got a exchange rate of close to 14.5 to the dollar (that is $1.93: gallon)

One station operator told me that he would have to close if he didn't make money on the exchange rate, he can't make it on the Pemex allowed price.

Regular was 7.41 Peso per Liter when I got gas last week.

Don't know where bajalou's station is, but my take on the proliferation of Pemex stations was that the independent operators/ franchisees, were making their money from the convenience stores.

Thanks Lou... that is pretty close to my guess (7.38) after calculating the price with what bits of info Dave and Jan gave us!

Once a month, if you could give us the pesos per litre price and the posted exchange rate at that the station, it would be great... I (or you) could then convert it to dollars per gallon.

I shop at the same station. On Friday I gave the cashier $20. I got 260 pesos worth... That's 13-1. The price was 7.4 something.

She paid with pesos.

Yes Dave, I know... 7.41 per BajaLou.

So, will there ever be a place to get a good pastrami sandwich again?

What are you guys doing to keep busy since the deli closed?

Pemex stations in Baja are a good source for amusement . They are like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get next. Witness a story by one of my friends in Loreto. He took an empty 100gal. tank into town to fill with fuel for his boat. After the attendant was through my friend calculated the quantity and it equaled 115gal. Upon being questioned by my friend about how he could fit 115gal. in a 100gal. tank, the attendant assumed a look of amazement and said "Its a miracle!" My friend knew he was bested so he paid up and praised the miracle. Everyone who visits Baja much has many stories about the gas stations and I find them much funnier than what we have to put up with in the states where giant oil companies put it to us with the approval of our gov't.

Easier test that won't cost as much: 5 gallon gas can ('jerry can') is 19 litres filled to the top...

See how many litres you favorite Pemex can get it it! In Loreto, 23 was reported (6 gallons) once... I recall!
