Net siezures

Not as an apologist for laxity in enforcement, but just so you know it’s not all peekeeboo no see um, here are the datos of 5 gillnet seizures and the impoundment of a panga longliner that was fishing without a permit, all in the Loreto Marine Park, and all within the past few weeks. These enforcement personnel are very short on resources and often have to go into dangerous situations to try to perform their jobs. I believe that under enforcement is better than none at all.

There are rumors of this same thing happening over here. Unfortunately, it's also resulting in abandoned long lines containing many long dead fish, relatively speaking. One contained a 200+ lb mako shark.

Maybe this new enforcement is part of the reason we are experiencing such a good dorado season so far.

The gill netters are related to the legal authorities responsible for enforcing the laws against gill-netting. Talking about family connections. They're not gonna mess with family.

NOPE! its Eco Alianza putting pressure on the park AND the fact that there are many scientists and media personnel here in town due to the upcoming marine park management plan changes.
****************

The following is an invite to the conservation sector of the park management plan revisions:

I hereby send you greetings. We write for two reasons: first, to present the final report of the first phase of consultation which is a "map" of the actors and relevant issues regarding the general objective of the Loreto Bay National Park.

The second reason is to invite you to participate in the second phase of the participatory process of the parks revision management plan. To begin, it consists of the first CONSERVATION sector reunion. The meeting is to review the Management Program of Loreto Bay National Park and will be held on Saturday May 16, from 9 am to 3 PM at the Universidad Autonoma de Baja California Sur Campus Loreto (Paseo Pedro Ugarte s / n Col. Missionaries zip code 23880) and we want you to join us for making this process an enriched one.

The objectives of the meeting are:

1. Validate the document with the actors
2. Obtain more proposals in order to elaborate the new management program
3. Begin to explore a possible representative for the whole Conservation sector.

After the first reunion, we will resort to a technical committee in order to present our CONSERVATION opinion on the legal and technical feasibility of the proposals that emerge from the sectorial meeting.

After the participatory process, a second sectorial meeting will be held in June where we will resume the results given by the technical committee, the proposals will be further reviewed, and we will start introducing the negotiation process. The third phase of the process has a negotiation workshop and a plenary session in July where all the sector proposals will be presented together. The last phase is a final plenary meeting in September where we intend to reach a final agreement for the new management program that will be used in the next five years.

For us and for the success of the process is very important to have your valuable presence at all stages and we hope to confirm your attendance at the first sectorial meeting in May. Please contact us for any information. Telephone: Mexico, 55 5286 6440, Loreto, 613 135 0477.

Email: lina@sociosmexico.org, jportilla@colaboracioncivica.org,
emariano@conanp.gob.mx.

Thanks.

The sector meeting for commercial fishing is from 9am to 3pm at UABCS Loreto on thursday May 14th

The sector meeting for the sport fishing is from 9am to 3pm at UABCS Loreto on Friday May 15th.

again the second phase of sector meetings will be in June. The final plan will be in place January 2010

I made a mistake regarding the upcoming sector meetings that are taking place now for the new Loreto marine park management plan:

they WILL NOT be open to the public. I was recently informed that only specific stakeholders in the park have been invited.

I was invited to the commercial fishing, the sport fishing and the conservation sector meetings.

I will not attend the conservation sector meetings because Eco Alianza will attend and I am part of that organization. I did not attend todays commercial sector meeting because I am very tired from my shotgun trip to La Paz yesterday.
I WILL attend the sport fishing sector meeting tomorrow

I'll be able to meet the organizers and get an idea of how it all runs during tomorrows meeting then I will plan to attend the future commercial sector planning either personally or represented by the cooperative I now belong to.

I found the public hearing that SEMARNAP held for the Puerto Escondido project enlightening. They give a lot of consideration to not only positive but also negative feedback of the proposals.

Later when I find some time, I'll start a thread on what Loreto marine park user's input would be in these sectors that I listed. All users of the park, resident, visiting, foreign, national are stakeholders but they do not all have an invite. As someone who will be part of this decision making, I would like to hear outside opinions. thank you.
