news on Citizenship Process

I just spoke to the amazing gilberto piñeda in DF....he's the man to go to for obtaining mexican citizenship! He informed me that there have been some changes...the written test is now a bit easier and that people 60 years of age and up do NOT have to take the test!! good news for retirees here.

gilberto is very helpful in any tramites you have to do in mexico city...he helped out with renewing my canadian passport there...is a great guy with serious contacts there. In case you need to do anything in DF, he will pick you up at the airport...help you do your business...get in and out in a day or so if you want. He even has an awesome suite in his house where you can stay. He makes your DF visit safe and fun.

Well Shari, It is good to hear that the process has again been simplified.

I used Gilberto 3 years ago, it was much easier than what folks have had to go thru for the last couple of years. Still, I sweated it out for a few months while they changed the location of the Exterior Relations offices in Mx. City, and also I think Gilberto lost ground with his contacts at that time, he was not a happy camper. Anyway, my documents took a walk around the block and I thought they were forever lost and flew home to Baja figuring I would have to start the process over again, Bummer. In fin, Gilberto contacted me a couple of weeks after I got home and informed me that the documents were found, I was happy to fly back to Mexico City and get the job done. In the process I discovered that the signed completion of my paper work was Sept., I flew home from the Mainland to Baja in Dec., Gilberto contacted me a couple of weeks later and I opted to return in Feburary to do my final signing. I am sure glad I will never ever have to go thru the process again.

Still, although my ride was a little bumpy, it was much easier than what others have had to deal with, (no tests, no questions), well worth the effort for the freedom that citizenship gives me, and yes, I would recommend him. Wonder what he charges now, it cost me a couple of grand when I worked with him.

Each case is different depending on what tramite you do...mine was much cheaper than that...but now there is a written test in spanish if you are under 60. Although a bit pricey, Gilberto gets the job done...i had tried twice before to do it in La Paz and no luck. I too got held up in the office move in DF. It does take a long time though....like 8 months at least...and you need to have your fm2 with at least 6 months time before renewal on it. OK, Gilberto's office phone # is 555-529-8701 and it is best to call in the early evening or his cell phone is 555-419-6812 but it's hard to talk to him while he is driving! If you need help let me know....please tell him shari sent you...i told him I would be trying to send him more business...his business took a real nosedive when they starting requiring the exam in spanish. His family are all wonderful and they will treat you really well. Plan to stay a few days in DF to see all the fantastic architecture and museums, the murals etc...awesome.

I wish we had a "Gilberto" in the US for the Mexicans trying to obtain citizenship. Perhaps he could do away with the "English Only" campaign against hispancs since he has so much influence. (corruption/mordida/compadrazgo/money under the table, etc.)
On the other hand, it is always to have a Gilberto anywhere, isn't...?

If you are referring to getting Mexican Citizenship, you have to have and FM-2 that would put you some years down the line.
