Whale Sharks in BoLA
For those who would like to see Whale Sharks, Bahia is the place to be right now. One morning last week, when heading out to go fishing around the
islands with Marv and Gail, the engine on their inflatable suddenly died about 3/4 of a mile out. It just so happens that the area where we were
temporarily stranded was chock-full of Whale Sharks, about 7-8 of them. We obviously weren't getting out of there anytime soon, so I hopped into the
water with my camera in hand and swam with them for about 30 minutes. I thought I would share some photos and a little video from the encounter. The
engine did start again eventually, but of course that wasn't until we had paddled most of the way in, a hundred yards off the beach to be exact. Its
funny how that happens...

whale sharks at BOLA
We have a place at Gonzaga Bay and we have seen more Whale Sharks this year than ever before. At Thanksgiving last year we had 30-40 of them in the
bay where we had never seen more than two or three before. They have stayed around too.
I have often wondered if the Mexican fishermen who work the Sea of Cortez catch Whale Sharks...I have never seen one caught. I know they are
protected but that sure doesn't stop the Pescadores from catching anything else...Totuaba for instance.
Maybe Whale Sharks don't taste good...hope so. They are just magnificent.

Even if they did acquire a taste for humans they couldn't do much damage. They don't even have teeth

Great photos and video! I kept telling Dern that we need to get an underwater camera.
A number of large orange buoys have been set out in the bay to remind private boaters to slow down to the suggested speed of 5mph to avoid hitting the
whale sharks. We saw a number of them with prop wounds, one with it's fin cut in half, another with the top part of it's tail flopped over.
Here's one that's met a prop;
