HELLO NOMADS, it's David K in (& back from) L.A. Bay!

Happy 4th of July!!! It's Sunday morning and the weather couldn't be more perfect!!!

On Friday we arrived at Camp Gecko at 5:30pm... We had a nice lunch at the Wet Buzzard (Cielito Lindo/Gypsy's) with Dave (Porky Pig) and a visit earlier with Keri at the Pyramid Resort.

The last 1/3 of the L.A. Bay highway is being re-paved (right now they are working on the section near the San Borja road and the old asphalt is removed so you do drive on dirt for a few miles. A new military checkpoint is located where the beautiful view of the bay is seen.

Saturday, we visited with 4Baja, Bo, and others from Moro Bay area. Kevin Humfreville arrived and Doc had a cabin for his group. No sign of SoCalAl (Alex)??!!
We did obtain plenty of clams for Debra's chowder and so much yellowtail that some leaving guests of Gecko left plenty for Doc to pass around. Chris gave his bag to Beth, who made sushi with it... YUMMY!
Dan White and his wife Melody came down to Gecko to meet us with a chilled bottle of Gran Centenario!!! They were staying at Costa del Sol motel, and said it was a great recommendation.
Doc did deliver the message about Debra arriving today, so we are looking for her here in town... Yes, I will get some potatoes and bacon for the chowder.

I am thinking of going to San Borja today and Las Animas tomorrow... It is just so nice at Gecko, you hate to leave... We did drive out to La Gringa yesterday and did some snorkeling. The road is paved to just past Raquel and Larry's driveway. It is not very good paving, just slapped some oil on the sand and painted a stipe on it!

Well, kids are anxious to get back to swimming, so I will say "adios" and "hasta la vista mi amigos"... Baja just doesn't get much better than this, honest!!! (No, it's not TOO hot)

Very cool, Please tell us about the fishing, the water temperature and the weather. Are the whale sharks in the bay? Thanks for the report!

I still remember years ago snorking at La Gringa and looking at the sand below covered with rays.

All I can say ... is you dirty rat. Wish I was there.

WE'RE BACK

Just a quick note, it's muy late!

Thanks Nomads...
Clam chowder was awesome!!!!

Monday, six of us went to Bahia las Animas (100's of giant squid all along the beach near the mangroves).

Lot's of great yellowtail sushi (sashimi) was prepared by Whiskey Girl (Beth) and Travelpearl (Debra) then enjoyed by David A, Yvonne, Cory, Beach Bob, Doc, Kevin Humfreville, Greg, and yours truly.

Bay was like glass most the time, light wind in the afternoon. Needed a light blanket at night, so sleeping was easy!

Seems Yellowtail was easy catching, bass also.

Border wait at 8pm was 1hr.10 min. carpool lane San Ysidro.

Weather at Gecko was too perfect to leave too much, so no San Borja or extensive lost mission hunting!

Left Gecko at 10:30 am (TUE).. Lunch at Santa Ynez at 12:30.. Side trip to Agua Dulce and found the better access from Hwy. 1 that Neal reported.

Details coming... photos too! Thanks again to Dan White for coming down to Gecko to meet us, and the Gran Centenario was great, too!

Hope you're taking Wednesday off too--the first day back after Mex is better spent in reflecting and relaxing than trying to get any work done......

Hey, Mexitron... that's pretty true! Actually, I got in too late to unload my truck... So, I just finished a ton of phone message return calls... looks like the Baja gods have been thinking of me as it seems I have work lined up now. Now, I will unload and clean up... then load up with my sprinkler stuff...

Bob H, how is it the president got so lucky to stand next to a Baja oficianado like you?

RJM, the water was still cool in the bay maybe high 70?s. Perhaps because it still isn't that hot on land yet, maybe in the 90?s at most.

No whale sharks, but did hear lots of other whales late at night exhaling (and sea lion barking).

Yellowtails being caught... I didn't fish, so can't give too much details there.

Duckman, bummer on the Nevada race! You are welcome on the directions, any time amigo!

Pappy Jon, the kids saw lots of rays in the deeper water, none in the shallow sand swimming areas like in April during mating season.

BajaCactus, hi Antonio... got gas both directions at your El Rosario station and see that you have plenty of attendants now to assist the customer with mini serve to full serve, rather than totally self serve. They were very polite, washed windows and smiles! I didn't take time to walk over to the motel, but it looks like a lot has been built and more going on. Debra stoped there to spend the night, but there was no vacancy. However, the manager was kind enough to call Mama Espinoza's and secure a room for Debra there, and she appreciated that very much. You are doing everything great! Hope to meet you soon...

Okay... back to work!

Great... if you can, pop into the long distance/Internet store just north of Las Hamacas restaurant. They charge only $3/hour for Internet access. Give us a report!
