Abreojos trip report....
Gas up before the border and cross about 2 P.M....going up the hill towards the toll road takes 45 minutes...road is being repaved....listen to
classic rock music station as I pass Calafia and wonder when that condo tower on the beach will fall down...under construction for 10+ years wasn't
it?....Get to El Rosario about sunset....gas up ...look for BAJA CACTUS to say hello...can't remember where it is...stop at the Delegation and
ask...they don't know hotel but when I mention Antonio the know right away...he isn't there...I'm a day late...continue until I reach the BOLA turnoff
and stop for the night along side the road...sleep well and head to Guerrero Negro...arive about 8 A.M....pay $1.00 for spraying...stopped by
Migration...fill form and need to find bank to pay for it...drive into G.N. for the bank and it is open...beats the U.S. banks for hours....
(to be continued)....

after the bank I'm on the road to Vizcaino for a fillup...51 liters....and head for the turnoff for Abreojos sun is out early and is strong...road
"shines" like it is wet no traffic for many miles...see signs for picking up trash and keeping enviro clean...20 miles of paved road...where did that
come from?...I remember it as all dirt from last trip...road finally turns to smooth hard pack and the miles fly by...beach area is getting built up
but lizzards still have a place to roam...and road runner looking for a lizzard meal as he comes through my camp...town is VERY clean...de salt plant
for water..no vendors trying to sale blankets and cheap fake watches...sky is cloudy with a few drops of rain from a passing hurricane.....

took evening walk first night...down the beach towards town....lots of shells....bones of something in the dry sand...might have been a seal....rusted
Chevrolet truck in the dump area...and bicycle frames...wondered what stories they could have told of where they had been and who used them.....met
local driving a red ranger truck...Ismael...62 years old...born there....gave me a ride back to camp and wanted a beer...sure...and come back tomorrow
for another ...which he did...even brought wife one evening...he is building a house on the hill ....overlooking the ocean....last time there some
people from Oregon had a wedding on the beach in some palapas...look for these but only the foundations are left...hope the wedding lasted longer for
them.....Friday AM brings a GIANT moth into my camper shell...5-6 inch wingspan...looking for a place to hide...must have thought this was the bat
cave...easily chased him outside to look for other lodgeings...sea birds gather in a large bunch on the beach...seagulls...pellicans.....the aluminum
can man comes every day collecting from the beach...too early this morning for me...will save some for him tomorrow....later in the day I visit the
cemetary...windy with a view facing the town into the sunset....see baseball bat and hat left at gravesite...and another had a baseball jersey....some
sites are built with cinder blocks and rocks with wooden cross...others have plastic flowers in beer bottles ....top of hill has marker
1968-1969....what happened to this too short life?....

SNAKE!....came traveling through my camp one afternoon...looking for lizzards?...he patrols the beach, rocks, kelp which has dried up on the
shore....moves like a 4x4... can cross any sand and hills with ease.....Billy the surfer....comes in around sunset one night...claims he is "world
champ" in 1964...tells many tall tales of travel around the world...never heard of him and I surfed for 35 years....did tell about surfers and
drugs....he need something on the way down and stopped some locals somewhere...wanted coke but had to settle for chry meth...$10.00 worth...this I
belived...he also told of the drug scene at the surf contests and how he did 10 grams of coke a day...I think even the guys in movie SCARFACE couldn't
do this....Saturday morning I decide to leave as the wind and storm surf have not been favorable for me 6-8 feet but 5 seconds between waves...not
quality....going for the loop up to Punta Eugenia....did it 20+ years ago....road is fast and smooth...did cruise control at 40 mph and listened to
CD's.... area of about 25 miles near San Jose de Castro is washboardy...but OK....arrive Tortugas at 12:30 pm...has power plant and PEMEX station with
gas I think...didn't need any myself....

from tortugas to Eugenia is the smoothest road in Baja....saw 2 graders working in this area...(.in fact the whole Vizcaino area has great
roads).....not much to see in this area until it gets to the point...there you have the lighthouse...1931 plaque on it...old diesel power plant and
tank...thick kelp...deep blue water ....calm...no clouds in sight...senic area...the Isla Natividad looks so close I think I could paddle my surfboard
over there...eat quick lunch on the beach and head out...past the turnoff to Malarrimo...(some other time)....and again on a smooth road back to
Vizcaino... fill up with gas again...and head north to BOLA for the night...get there about 9PM...down to La Gringa...and it STINKS there....rotting
seaweed maybe?....huge bug like something from an Indiana Jones movie gets in my truck...and lots of little things are attracked by my lights....awake
at sunrise to seals, hummingbird and seabirds being busy so early....try to fish from shore but too much seaweed around....by 9 AM it is getting warm
and looks to be the start of a HOT day....time to try surfing again as I go to cuatro casas near Colonet....arrive about 4 PM to some 3-5 foot surf
but infrequent sets and 10 guys out...still got a FEW fun waves...

casas is peaceful...been going there for 25+ years so it is an old friend...calm winds today and some fog...rice, beans, tortillas, cheese and a Miller
beer for dinner...awake in the morning to small waves and decide to go home as ice is gone...food is gone...all clothes are dirty...the usual drive
home except for the accidents...first is an overturned van ...looks like it hit hard....later in Ensenada a dead woman is being looked at in the
middle of the street....run over maybe...then on toll road 2-3 cars wrecked...one over the devider...one into devider and another on the side of
road....daytime driving is TOO dangerous ....next up is a police car headed south stopped behind another car...cops have machine guns in their hands
but nobody is in the car...border is 10 minutes at about noon...total mileage is 1623 ....and tomorrow we return to work again....

With another traveling 4x4 vehicle the side trip from Tortugas via the coast and down to Malarimmo and then out through the wash ending up on the road
would have been awesome for your trip. As we have discussed previously, it's a great trip, but be totally prepared and self-sufficient for extraction
from the mud and sand. Study the tide charts and time the beach run at low tide. Say for example, this past trip for you, woulda been, let's say
northeast heading towards Malarimmo Beach and exiting up the wash/canyon back to the road...spend the night...cuz it's friggin' unbelievable! Sounds
like you had a great trip...covered some awesome territory...you passed Rancho Los Santitos heading into Tortugas in the hills. It was off to the left
side...great cheese for sale there.
And you can turn into the beach there as well.....ah, all the secrets!!! LOL

I thought about trying the beach run....but the thought of some/any problem and being stuck until someone came by didn't appeal to me as it too remote
for solo travel....so close and so far....

Yep, I concur! I wouldn't run that route alone unless you have Sat phones and people who will drop what they are doing to help you right now...
With 2 4x4 Toyota's that'd be a great trip...steak, shrimp & some cerveza and go...don't forget the camera...
