insurance SD plates to usa

We keep our South Dakota plated vehicles insured in the USA with liability only policies in case we drive them north. That only happens about once a year for a month or so. Or not.

I know many have cancelled their USA insurance. The question is, what do you do if you want to drive it on vacation up to the states? How do you insure? Good friends in Zacatitos are asking me, so I told them I would try to find out.

Is there a company that does temporary policies like they do for coming south with a US plated car? I know they do it for north bound Mex plated cars, but what about South Dakota plated?

Right-on, Tom. Don't know if it's an issue or not, but she's from Canada and is pretty good with English. Just one less thing to worry about for some.

You don't have to cancel your insurance, just suspend it, then you can reinstate the policy with a phone call when heading north.
