Mars is coming

i got an email stating that Mars will come to within 34,000,000 miles of earth over the next few weeks culminating on Aug 27. Mars will be as bright as the full moon and has not come that close in 5000 years......

if it's true it should be fairly awesome! anyone able to verify this via another source?

I've seen iterations of that email for several years...yes Mars is/was very close, and while as bright as the full moon per square unit perhaps, its in reality just a brighter Mars than usual................

You missed it by a few years.
This took place in 2003.
Don't feel bad, I got the same mail from a friend.

I remember wondering why there were 2 moons in the sky back then. Thought it was just the moonshine.

Its not entirely a hoax, as the article in snopes explains--Mars did have two close encounters with us, in 2003 and 2007, but as is usual with emails things get embellished---Mars was just a little brighter than usual.

Yes its a standard yearly mars hoax, something us amatuer astronomers have to dispell all the time.

If Mars were indeed the same size as the full moon in the sky it would be VERY bad for the Earth. Can you say tidaly ripped apart?
