On the bubble

Tejone

There is a terribly old British quote: “The cat can look at the Queen”. Pretty simple. We are all God’s creatures. That came into my mind this morning in a purely Mexican way. Kinda strange for a gringo to have such thoughts.

Yesterday’s exercise tradeoff for a couple of Bloody Mary’s was to walk in the “feels like” 116° heat of mid morning (instead of taking my Trooper) the few blocks (uphill – all the way) to the water company, OOMSAPAS, to pay my bill. I figured the exercise mixed with the heat index would offset the Oso Negro vodka damage by a substantial percentage.

I was just kidding about the one way hill. The heat and the incline had me puffing on the way up so I took an easier way back. Going back was not cool but was tolerable – I began to whistle as I walked. Across the street from Angel’s house (sobrenombre Chicano, the guy who repairs fridges, washers, dryers, etc.), at the edge of a vacant lot, I spied the home of the wily tejone, the badger.

Badgers are loners and don’t keep company with humans. So once again I can revel in just how rustic this little place remains while style and culture abound – last night me and the badger could hear the music from the Cancha, the cheers from the crowd when the queen of the village was crowned and cameras lit up the silk and taffeta gowns, the crystal crown of the loveliest and most popular of the pueblo’s pretty young girls.

Place is just right for me. I need taffeta and tejones. Humans and connection with all things natural to make the balance point almost imperceptible.
