Saludos de La Tierra del Sol

Ay que Mi Linda Oaxaca, "Tierra del Sol". Perfect for a walk last night, down right chilly this morning, very warm, hide in the shade hang in a hammock kind of mid day. I saw my original Maestro de Arte, Armando last night, it was so very good to connect again after too long a time away. I down right forgot how much I Love Oaxaca until I got back. It is good to be here!

Well wouldn't you know it, I am happier in Oaxaca than I had planned, it is not going to be so easy to leave as I thought. As much as I miss home, this is very comfortable. Of course, I already have a work table set up with a collage and I am painting the Virgin of Guadalupe on a broken roof tile to give thanks for making me feel so welcome and at home where every I land.
Sometimes, I think the hardest thing in my life, is I like it all. I want to be in Coatapec, I love it here in Oaxaca, I sure want to go home, man, do I miss Chiapas, when oh when will I ever make it back to San Miguel, dang but Michoacan calls me, and what about Guatamala, I wonder what Antigua would be like, huuuuummmm.

Where is "home" Sara? You seem to have so many places you think of as home.

Well, my dear Sarita, I was wondering how long it would take you to remember your great love for Oaxaca and your family there. Less than a day, huh?!

Have fun there these coming weeks with your art and your teachers. Return to Barriles to hug and kiss the grandkids on their own turf. THEN all these other great places await you.

Guess I'm going to have to get my patootie down there to see what art goodies you're bringin' back.

abrazos fuerte, amiga,

nena

Dennis; HOME sweet HOME is Los Barriles. This is where I lived as a kid, where my father is buried and my grandchildren were born and are now being rasied.

Ah but, My heart also lives in Oaxaca and now Vera Cruz.

I guess in the end Home is Mexico, or at least Planet Earth.

Oh how Oaxaca seduces me! It is just way to easy to be here in this comfy home I have on loan, spend my mornings painting, afternoons wandering around the City. I know it is time to go home to Baja, yet there is just so much more I want to experience before I go, sigh............Ni Modo

The manifest is part of Oaxaca's personality. Last week, the bus drivers were protesting for better payment policys. There was a very small one yesterday, these Marchers were requesting more teachers for rural areas. There is a joke in Oaxaca, that one of these days the Dogs are going to protest the Cats.

The riots of 2006 have not been repeated since. Although better this year than last, Tourism has not been the same since that uprising. I was here that year, and really if one did not hang out in an APPO camp at 2 a.m., one was left alone by both sides. Still, the damage to the economy was devasting for the local community, more than 5000 people lost their jobs in the tourist industry.

The art, the color, the sounds, the smells, the hospitality of the people is the wonder that always draws me back. Oaxaca has always been very kind to me, (even in it's most difficult times).

Yesterday, I went to El Centro de Abastos, I wanted to do some Day of the Dead shopping and buy a big canasta for shipping. Before I left the house, I took off my earrings, gold medallion, and rings. Also, I did not take my camera, as much as it is a wonderful opportunity to shoot pictures. Only to go to this imense Market would I take this type of precaution. Although any where that it is crowded, I wear my money purse in my bra. One needs to be aware, that's all.

Oh, Lencho, I forgot to mention, that in the end, nothing changed in the school system, the teachers got a minor raise and a few more benefits, but they did not consider it enough and of course continue to make public speeches and denounce the government. No real good came from that type of violent manifest, never does.

Larry, when I ate my last Tlayuda yesterday, I thought of You. It was homemade and the best yet.

Today I get on the bus, Mexico City bound, one night in a hotel and I am finally after almost half a year going home to Baja. My thanksgiving dinner will be a Paella fest Saturday with family.

It has been a wonderful adventure, Southern Mexico has treated me with the greatest kindness, but still I must say the ol cliche, the best thing about traveling is going home, I am just so ready to be home.
