Hope they reopen. When we camped the length of The Baja we could hardly wait to check into Las Cabañas and roll out of the room and into the pool. The staff there was always helpful and efficient and the secure parking was great for the big truck with kayaks and surfboards on top. One trip we managed to stay there three different times. Keeping fingers crossed they sort it out and get it together again.

Los Arcos La Paz

Any word on Los Arcos hotel and bungalows in La Paz? Just curious. This was the first place I even stayed in Baja and I have always been a bit sad that it closed. It was such a nice place (love the bungalows!) and it seemed like someone was cutting their nose off to spite their face when it closed. Of course, I don't know the real back story (I'm sure few do). Anyway, does anyone know what, if anything, is happening with this property?

The rumor around town is that the owner lost the lawsuit so basically just said "the heck with them, I'll keep it closed before I will pay anyone a dime!" Of course we all know Baja runs on rumors and that if you listen to enough people you can eventually hear any answer you want.

"Judicial Power of the Federation (PJF) denies her protection to the company Hotel and Tourism of Baja California, better known as Hotel Los Arcos, so traditional hotel owners paceño should cover not only the wages of more than eighty employees from Section 70 of the Trade Union of Workers in the Hotel, Gastronomy and related Mexico, all benefits due and even the tips, adding an amount of approximately forty million dollars. "

This was revealed by the secretary general of the State Union of gourmet. He said that the Second Court ruled in favor of workers "in the sense that it had to take into account each and every one of the benefits that accrued at the time workers before the strike, and that for any reason the Board Conciliation could walk groping and eliminating benefits. "

The same union calls for the impeachment of President of the Board of Conciliation and Arbitration of Baja California Sur, Mohamed Medina de la Toba, also asking for an audience with Marcos Covarrubias, in order to resolve the strike who turns five years on November 21.

"The board of reconciliation with the former president, and we had issued a resolution, where we granted, naturally, integration of tips, basic food. But when he enters this new president, when his turn to issue a new resolution, it takes away the basket, we remove the tip and integration of course, that decreases the final amount as fifty percent [...] We are asking the impeachment of President of the Board of Conciliation [...] It can not be the president of the Board of Conciliation in the same location. It can not be because it is impacting on workers. "

It sounds to me like it will take at least another ten years to get through the Mexican justice system. In the end, the employees will probably end up with a run down hulk of a hotel, and the only winners will be the abogados.

That was a bit hard to understand...the owner will have to pay $40 million dollars to settle the strike and re-open?

We also stayed at the "Cabanas" several times for a week or more, right by the pool---------it was great!!!! and no noise at all, but admit there were no kids in residence while we there.

So the workers won some points, others were not decided, and the owners will appeal. And the beat goes on...bummer.
