Dunsmuir!
As we are making our umpteenth long drive from Loreto to Montana right now, we are trying to avoid the usual convenient, boring freeway stops. After
crossing the border we spent one night in Santa Barbara and one night in San Francisco. Had a great time, spent a small fortune!! Trying to keep the
trip pleasant and surprising, we are spending a night in Dunsmuir at http://cavesprings.com/ the Cave Springs hotel in north Dunsmuir. It is inexpensive, clean, relaxed-- we love it. We are in a standard room,
but found that the cabins have an incredible view over the river, looking off to Mount Shasta, and look to be even more charming than the motel rooms.
At check-in they told us that the new microbrew restaurant just a short way back toward town was excellent-- and boy was it ever! Relaxed, friendly,
really good food and local beer reasonably priced. I'm so glad we didn't do the usual Redding Motel 6/ Outback Steakhouse grind!!

Oh Paula,
Don't miss Mossbrae Falls. You just hike up the railroad tracks about 1/2 mile from town. It's beautiful and the air is so cool and refreshing near
the bottom. The people at the motel will tell you how to get there. These falls are often shot for outdoor calendars so bring your camera.

Paula, thanks for taking my minds eye back to Dunsmier, I have not been there in over 30 years, but good memories abound. It is a beautiful little
town and the surrounding woods, well, as Skipjack Joe's picture well prove. Happy Trails Amiga, hope to see you again some day in L.B.

Dunsmier is a GREAT place. And the drive to where ever you are going that takes you through the North State is beautiful. I am glad you enjoyed it
as we also love that area (and live nearby). Nancy

Thanks for the tip and the picture, Skipjack. Had to rush off this morning, hope to catch the falls on the way back south.
Sara, I'm happy to invoke good memories, hope to get to LB again next winter. Have a lovely summer!
We are in Boardman OR tonight. Bad timing, not the best place to stop
They could rename it Boredman.

You were in my neighborhood.
My friends Louie Dewey and his wife Belinda are wonderful hosts at Cave Springs. Louie is a former Mayor of Dunsmuir, and B. is ready to start a new
career teaching college art.
This area around Mt. Shasta has a lot to offer.
I'm glad you enjoyed yourself. We have an influx of folks at this time of year, and sometimes someone even honks at one of the three stop lights. We
sometimes say: "If it's tourist season, why can't we shoot 'em?" But that's just because traffic moves faster and smoother when the power is out and
we have 4way stops! Seriously, we really work our butts off to make visitors welcome! We're the perfect stop between SF and Portland for many folks.
Here's a typical day recently.

As a matter of fact there actually is a town named Boring, OR. Not far from Portland on the way to Mt. Hood.
Also, not a town but just a place in the woods, called Hole in the Ground, It's in the pine barrens and all that's there is, well, a big hole in the
ground.

You are probably remembering being told of Shasta Springs Resort. There was an inclined railway up the mountain to the rest of the elaborate
facilities. Having a large head of water available, they had artificial geysers spouting high in the air all the time, and a place for folks to drink
from the carbonated mineral spring at trackside during the brief stop as the engines made the last of the transit of the canyon from Redding in the
valley to the summit at (Sisson) Mt. Shasta. With 15 tunnels and 18 river crossings, the section took more than a decade to build between 1875 and
1887.
That place and the old Royal Oaks Motel are now part of the "I AM" Activity and their ascended master St. Germaine does not look kindly on uninvited
guests.

My Dad worked as a lifeguard in Dunsmuir in 1931. He saved an elderly couple from drowning. Made the local paper. I have photos of him at his station
posing with some really pretty gals. Times don't change.
