Busted In Hermosillo

Seems every time I find myself in Hermosillo I get lost. It's the general layout and roadwork detours that lead nowhere. My buddy Pete and I are on the way to Basaseachic Falls and Copper Canyon. After leaving our hotel and driving around looking for ice and gas we are lost again. Pete is driving when "oh s**t" we blow through a red light. I look to my right and there's a motorcycle cop at the intersection. He is a young good looking guy with a ready smile and speaks good English. We tell him that we are looking for Mex16 to Chihuahua and we are lost. Well, after he gives us directions out of town he says the red light will cost $65 but he will take $50 cash. After we pay him he says "just follow me". We do and he leads us through town to the freeway to the east and we wave goodbye. We don't feel bad about the payoff; I don't consider it mordida because we did run the light.

On the return trip we discover that if we had backtracked three lights from the hotel, a turn to the right would have taken us around town and to the freeway. Duh!!

Yeah, it's rampant in that town, if you have gringo plates.

HMO has gone fly-over crazy in the last few years. Detours all the time. But this is the first one that I can remember that affects the "bypass" or truck route. Usually, it's pretty easy to follow THROUGH town.

The problem with HMO (besides the crooked cops) is the large knolls in the middle of the city that force streets to travel N/S in some areas and E/W in others. It's confusing.

Nothing like a nice, gridded city for ease of travel.

Basaseachi Falls area is incredible. Many think it better than Copper Canyon. I've havent been to CC yet.

BTW, that road from HMO to Basaseachi defines the term windy road. Even worse than Cal Hwy 1.

We actually started from in town and lost track of the truck route. That road to CC is something else. My third time on it and my last. Will post pics of Falls & CC soon.

THIS THE LAST LOOKOUT BEFORE DECENDING INTO THE CANYON

By train once and drove three times in the last 2 1/2 years. Put 3,500 miles on the truck last week. I need to recover. Will most likely change my mind about another trip some day

That is a lot of driving. Give yourself 1 year, and you will probably be in a different frame of mind. Did you post photos?

I think you did right to pay as well - the guilty must pay.

When we travel mainland, we always buy on line the map from ontheroadin.com and it will get you where you need to go without getting lost. It has all the tolls, military stops, ag inspections, Federal Vehicle Checks, Radar Speed trap areas, Wal-Marts LOL, HomeDepots, something about each town you will be coming to, takes you K.M. by K.M. so you know where you are at all times.
My wife loves these maps and cost $12 dollars to down load last year off internet. My wife says we don't argue or get mad by losing it with each other due to bad mappings otherwise,LOL. Now, everyone knows you should always treat your navigator with respect&Love or the trip will be misery for both, Hmmmmm?? LOL
By the way I have had cops try to ticket me twice in my annual run to Maztalan in Hermosillo for the past 8 years. No, I did not pay nor did I do anything they were claiming. However, if I did run a Stop Sign I would pay and doesn't everyone here know that everyone has been guilty of running those well hidden Stop Signs that no tourist would ever see!! Only the locals know where they are and Hell No They Don't Stop!! LOL Take Care & Travel Safe--- "No Hurry, No Worry, Just FUN" bajafun777
