Playa San Rafael/Bahia Asuncion for Thanksgiving

Just a quick trip report from last week. My long time friend, Pete, followed the family down to Baja for Thanksgiving week. We left San Diego early Saturday morning for Playa San Rafael, located 45 miles south of Bahia de Los Angeles. No issues driving south except for one small holiday parade. We stocked up on Tecate in BoLA and made our way south. The road to PSR is still in bad shape from last year's Baja 1000 but passable.

Pancho was excited to see us. He offered up some langosta seco and other goodies for us, we shared a few beers, and then said our goodnights. It's always good to see a Baja amigo. We set up camp on the beach and enjoyed a nice camp fire.

We stayed in PSR until Tuesday with great weather. The water temps were probably in the upper 60s to low 70s and the day time temps were in the mid 70s. We said our goodbyes to Pancho and headed south.

The road was in good condition. Our plan was to check out El Arco (I was last there probably 15 years ago) and then head to Bahia Asuncion. As we were leaving El Arco, Pete blew out a tire. He had a spare but could not remove it so we were stuck. We flagged down some locals who came to our rescue. They knew of someone who had the same exact used tire. After about 15 minutes, they returned with a remounted tire and installed it all for 150 pesos. We gave them 200 pesos and a can of abalone and said our good-byes.

We made our way to Bahia Asuncion and set up the casita. We had a few great days playing at the beach, eating lots of fish and shrimp, and hanging out with friends. It was great to see our neighbor, Miguel, booked with a number of charters. A group of guys from San Diego fished two days with him and slayed fish. They were so pleased that they are returning in a few weeks for more fish catching.

All in all, a great 8 days in Baja. We decided to return to San Diego via Tecate on Saturday evening...our gamble did not pay off as we had a two hour wait...ni modo.

Looking forward to heading back down for Navidad and Ano Nuevo in a few weeks. Here are a few pics: http://tinyurl.com/82y5vt4

Hope you enjoy!

Zac

Great slideshow. Have always liked your trip reports. Bahia San Rafael seems like a great destination. The desert shots around there were just wondeful. One of them looked like the grade up to La Cuesta De La Ley.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the report! Is your neighbor Miguel Anthony? My wife and I fished with him recently...super nice guy if he's the same guy. Good to see Corre Camino is doing well! Are the yellowtail still going off in Asuncion?

Thanks,

John

John, our neighbor is Miguel Angle Arce. His place is up by the concha and most likely his boat was out at San Roque. He often fishes north. The guys who fished with him limited on yellows and got a few nice black sea bass as well.

Love the photos Zac. We woke up to a foot of snow this morning with two more feet expected today. Your pics brought the warmth of Baja in to our winter wonderland.

Thanks

Excellent photos and videos there Zac... Thanks for sharing. The rock wall was very cool, too!

You are great with the kids and they are beautiful! Have fun taking them to Baja as much as I did with my two...

Thanks for the comments. I was fortunate to have my dad and Grandfather share Baja with me. Now it's my turn to pass along the favor. I love every moment of it, too!

Seriously, and introducing your babies to Baja may be the greatest gift you can give them (after life itself)!

Here are my babies getting into Baja... 20 years ago:
