Did you know that many Hollywood western movies were filmed off the 395?

If you get off of the graded dirt roads and walk around the old movie locations you can often spot discards from filming. We have found many 5 in 1 blanks used in the old westerns

Old people are like the old cars, made of some tough stuff. May show a little rust, but good as gold on the inside.

Alabama Hills

It's fun to watch old movies filmed there and try and find the filming locations. Aslo you can search on e-bay and other internet sites and try and find still photos taken on the movie sites, then match up the topography and find where the photos were taken..

The film museum is a must.

Also bring along good topo map quads (1:24,000' and 1:62,500' scale) and a hand held GPS. Do your research and map work before you go. Sort of like Geo Caching!!!!

yep, the Alabama Hills. During the 10 years I worked for the Navy at China Lake I think I explored every inch of all the country surrounding 395.

I lived on the base (China Lake), graduated from Sherman E Burroughs (Class of 60) and also worked on the base for a brief period out of high school.
I enjoyed hiking the hills.

Love Owens Valley, the valley that time forgot. As a family we have camped at Whitney for years, been to the top 4x. I have ridden my bicycle over Sonora Pass, down to Tioga Pass, up to Yosemite. Also I have turned left to go up to Walker, over Monitor Pass to Markleville Hot Springs. That view from Conway Summit overlooking Mono is just spectacular. The descent down is just killer!

Aye aye aye--- this is such a beautiful time of year to enjoy the 395 corridor. If the yellowtail in northern Baja would leave me alone, I`d be camping up Lone Pine way. To those who do go, the movie museum in Lone Pine is special. Found this video that reminds me of the one they show in the museum!!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJlD5roDqNw

BTW at 2:22 in the vid, there is a car that I believe is in the museum.

At the museum in Lone Pine, they sell the Movie Road self-guided tour book for $2. It has some of the movie locations, GPS coordinates, correlation with the road, and some old photos. It is very picturesque any way you enjoy it.
Movie Road is off Whitney Portal Road 2.7 mi - turn right.

Watched the old movie "Nevada Smith" last night on TMC. It surely had some terrific scenery from the Owens Valley.

Where can you find baby and smaller seagulls?

They are at Mono Lake, off the 395. It's a beautiful lake and scenery that you can observe from the highway. Lets not forget about Lee Vining. How about Markleeville home of the 10 foot fuzzy headed rattler and the Jackalope.

Just thinking about all the wonderful places around 395 makes me want to plan a trip this Spring or Fall.

Yes, yes, yes! The weather has been very pleasant
Unfortunately, after several years of drought, local tourist driven communities are suffering and many long time businesses are closing.
When your cooler is filled with yellowtail and you have had your fill of off roading and fishing and surfing Baja....Come visit the Eastside! We would love to see you!
By the way...Bodie and Whoa Nellie Deli are closed right now and will open in... May??
I just planned a 'Stay-cation' when Mom comes to visit at the end of this month....Manzanar internment camp, Lone Pine Film History Museum, Alabama Hills movie sets, Mt. Whitney portal and Death Valley wild flowers . So excited to finally see and experience it all, after driving past the area so many times.:bounce::bounce::bounce:

There is great scenery along 395 on the east side but for me the Lee Vining/ Mono Lake area tops it all.

Gees, this is an old thread! And I wonder which pictures of Mono I started it with.

Oh well, we live her now and enjoy it all everyday. A couple of days ago we were wandering around the Alabama Hills --- horrible light so no pictures, but it is still a beautiful place to be.

Since I forget which pictures I started this with, I thought I would throw in a few just for fun pictures I took a couple of years ago at the Movie Museum in Lone Pine. The fifteen minute history of movies in that area is a presentation WELL worth the time.

So, just for fun, :biggrin::biggrin:

While I wish I would have had a faster lens with me, I just couldn't resist when I noticed the man a few rows in front of us.

Love living here!

How many nomads recognize these scenes?

The only one I feel confidant about is Hopalong Cassidy.

The last one with Kirk Douglas pictured is I believe, "Along the Great Divide".

I'm wondering if it was Indians or holdup men who eliminated the coach driver?

And isn't that one gal Ida Lupino?
