Using a Tom Tom One N14644 GPS in Baja CA
So I got a good deal on this Tom Tom on eBay - AND THEN - started reading my "Outdoor Navigation with GPS" (publ. by Wilderness Press). Now I'm
wondering if I can use it Baja to find specific waypoints, add waypoints/routes, etc. I scanned through the manual for this device and at the same
time am learning what features I really need for my intended use. Thus, my confusion - maybe this N14644 doesn't have what I really need - it seems
like a dedicated highway navigation device.
Does anyone have specific info, i.e., speed learning, once I get this in the mail to prepare for travel south next week? For instance, I want to
start at El Volcan and hike to specific destinations from there. I'll need to load waypoints, right?
Forgive my "slowness" - I'm definitely not tech oriented.

Bought a garmin last year only to realize it wouldn't load some gps waypoints that a friend had emailed me. I needed to buy a $300 (?) program to
enable it. The one i bought was like $100 and basically for people who need street info in the usa. I returned it. If anyone knows of a kick ass
gps unit that comes pre-loaded with everything you need for Baja, let me know.

Both my TomTom & Garmin GPS's Don't show any detail. Only the highway and some dirt tracks. No land marks or terrain features.

I use my Iphone with the TomTom app for USA and Mexico. It cost about $50 for the app. It works well for street maps but not sure about GPS points.
I have an older Garmin for my quad that is a black and white display for GPS points, but you have to buy upgraded software to update it for Mexico.
You have to be careful with these GPS folks, they think North America is USA and Canada. I don't know how many GPS boxes I have looked at that states
for North America. Then when you buy it,oooooops, Mexico is not part of North America. I have even called tech support and had operators tell me
that Mexico is not in North America and argue the point???

for typical GPS devices you need to buy hardware AND map data SEPARATELY. if you want detailed maps of baja then you need to load detailed maps into
the hardware.
baja maps are probably not big seller for Garmin and TomTom, so they don't sell a "baja-ready" package, and you need to buy maps from some other
vendor and then upload them to your device.

TomTom is different from other GPS units in that you can very easily hack the unit and add functions. One of these hacks is called Offroad Navigator,
and does exactly what you want.

Its kind of complicated to get the maps in there but if you have any photoshop knowledge you can pretty easily figure it out. If you decide to take
on this task send me a message and I'll be your tech support and walk you through it. I might even still have all my map files for you. But its NOT
a moving map. Its a still image which shows your location and as you move out of one map's area, it automatically changes the map. And you have to
create your own maps, but unlike other systems like fugawi, you don't have to "calibrate" as much as make sure the corners are cropped correctly and
note the lat/lon of each corner and the program does the rest. Also, if you don't have maps, then this program turns your TomTom into a simple gps
that follows waypoints and routes that you add, and as you navigate it shows you the direction and distance to your next active waypoint. If you're
trying to make your TomTom do the job instead of exchanging it for another brand, this might be worth installing.

Thanks for all the info. I may fool around with Offroad Navigator, but most likely I will just try to sell it. If anyone is interested, you can have
it for $40.00. I just bid on an older Lowrance iFinder - does what I want it to do.
