Murals at Chicano Park-San Diego, revisited
Last year I posted some photos of the murals in Bario Logan. Just recently I read they were being restored, so I had to go back down. The
restoration after 38 years was extensive and involves many of the original artists, a few aren't alive anymore or their whereabouts are unknown.
The new paint used has a longer life span and is much more colorful as well. It also get an anti-graffiti coating the same as used by Cal-Trans on
freeway walls and bridges.
Felipe Adame, artist, shown finishing up some restoration work on murals first created in 1974. He has spent his life as an artist creating work all
over the world and is currently living in El Paso. He has assistants helping him with the taller portions of the work. This mural, for instance, is
over 2 stories high and is accessed by scaffolding.

Chicano Park has come a long way from the days of gang-banger graffiti. Even looks like it's safe to go there without Kevlar....maybe.

When my parents had the good sense to move from Butte MT to San Diego in 1952 we lived on J st in Logan Heights and there was no Chicano Park because
it was 95% black then and they had there own methods for keeping Mexicans (and whites) out of the hood. Glad to see that they were eventually replaced
by Chicanos.

Not to mention that the bridge on which the paintings hang wasn't there til 67 or 68.
