The passing of Jim Johanson aka Mooney Base

This post is from Cambria on one of the San Carlos forums. Surely some of you pilots and Punta Chivato old timers will remember Jim/Mooney Base................

Ham radio buffs and Cruisers in Baja and San Carlos fondly remember Jim Johanson, whose radio handle was MooneyBase after the planes he flew. Below is an email from his wife, Marry, confirming that Jim has left us. He is greatly missed by his many friends who either heard him on the Ham Nets or met him in Punta Chivato, San Carlos, or Tucson.

To Our Dearest Friends,

We are saddened to share the news of Jim's passing on May 7th, 2:40 p.m. Marry was at his side, holding his hand, when he strolled down a sunny beach to start his next journey. A drink in hand no doubt, and all of the beloved dogs of his life, at his side. Loved by so many, he will be missed dearly.

The response to our earlier email was heartwarming, and we would like to thank all of you for sharing the wonderful memories, stories and heartfelt sentiments. The collection of caring words and delightful stories will be cherished by the family and will be shared, with all, when we celebrate Jim's life at a later date to be announced. If you so desire, in lieu of flowers, the family is requesting a donation to your favorite animal shelter.

Thank you.

Calm winds and clear skies, Moony Base signing off...........

Marry and the Family
