Chest Pain....CALL 066.

CALL 066. You are having chest pain. How long will it take Cruz Roja to get to you? How long will it take you to get a ride to the hospital? Will you make it?

These are not popular thoughts, I assure you, but very realistic ones. Do you know you have 5 minutes to get yourself out of a deadly heart arrhythmia such as Ventricular Tachycardia? Arrythmias are the number one killers from heart attacks (blockage of one or more of the coronary arteries to the heart that slows or stops blood supply to an area of the heart causing an infarct or dead area of the heart muscle). An Automatic Cardiac Defibrillator (ACD)will analyze the rhythm, and will shock the rhythm back to normal, thereby saving a life. I encourage everyone to have access to an Automatic Cardiac Defibrillator, anywhere from the cities of Tijuana and Ensenada, to rural areas like Bahia Concepcion and Mulege.

Go to any mall or baseball stadium in the U.S. and you will see at least one mounted somewhere. All security, maintenance and employees of the facility are trained to tell you where they are. But they are few and far between in Mexico. Every community should have one. I encourage all of you to form a group and purchase and maintain one, and a chain of communication, so access to this machine is available 24 hours a day. I was part of an education group at Bajamar along with the chief contact for the ACD, Sandi Straka, a registered nurse in the United States, now living at Bajamar. Sandi has organized a chain of command 24 hours a day, and trained members of the Security squad out at Bajamar, should an emergency arise.

How much do these cost? It's a good idea if people can keep current on the training.

we just installed one of these units at our Recruit Reconditioning Facility at MCRD:

all you have to know is how to place the pads and hook up the leads in the right place and the machine does the rest.

What happens if this machine is used and it's not a heart attack? Any harm done?? Just asking.

the machine will only apply a shock if, after it analyzes your heart rhythem (sp?), you do actually have a shockable rhythem (sp?). otherwise it just tells you to continue cpr until an ambulance arrives.

if you hook it up to your passed out drunk friend and press the button, nothing will happen.

Glad I saw your post here Woody. The batteries need to be checked annually. If the buttons get pressed by accident and the battery gets discharged you have to buy a new battery. Also, people should take a refresher course every year to keep up to date on how to use it.
