BOLA town wifi report
On this last trip, we set up our town wifi system to get 24 hour internet. We purchased an access point devise for about $65 and had it programed by
our landlord. The cost of the service is $400pesos one-time set up fee and $100P per month - we paid for one year.
Within 30 minutes we had the entire system running. As we are 4 miles south of town, we had to have an antenna and then the access point (a box that
is programmed and controlled by the supplier so that if you don't pay, they can shut you off). We connect to the access point via cat5 cables but we
will install a small, local wifi next trip.
The speed was way better/faster than the Starband signal we were receiving before and a full 24 hours which was not the case before.
We did loose internet for almost 2 days because someone stole the copper cable in to the town's antenna but other than that, it worked fine.
For $85d per year, this will be sweet - no more tearing back to camp in order to check email before the camp signal goes off at 2:00pm.

I have a small antenna, then the EnGgenius access point like this:

I do not know how close to town you can be and not need the antenna, maybe someone else can tell us.

be careful when you do LOOSE internet amigo...those pop up ads are a dead giveaway...ask Skeeters!!! jejejejeje
really, that's terrific and will be a real bonus for the BOLA gang...progress! I wonder if it will slow down if lots of people get onto the system. In
a way, it's the end of an era....of meeting gringos we dont know in the internet cafe in town.

Thanks for the info, worth looking into. Your location isn't line-of-sight to town, is that not a problem or is the transmitter somewhere above town?
