Wine in Comondu . . . Who knew. . .
And we missed it.
We drove up there for a couple of hours yesterday afternoon late. Missed all the early events and not prepared to camp for the night, but it is
definitely on our list of events to attend next year.
Gov of BCS was there, too.

Thank you... interesting to see the small towns embrace their history. Shari did an in-depth trip report on Comondu a while back... makes it very
inviting to visit.
San Jose Comondu was once on the main trans-peninsular road down Baja, but once the paved highway was routed through Loreto (1971), the twin towns of
San Jose Comondu and San Miguel Comondu were of little interest to most new travelers.
A paved road was reported nearly completed into Comondu from the south and a dirt road connects Comondu with San Javier and Loreto or north to Hwy. 1,
a few miles south of Concepcion Bay (off the La Purisima/ San Isidro dirt road). The once graded dirt road from Comondu to San Isidro/ La Purisima was
reported badly washed out by DTBUSHPILOT and MOTOGED in recent times.

the wine they make there from the original 16th century grape vines brought over by the Spaniards is magical...it's more like a brandy or mead and is
very unique and absolutely delicious.
Make sure you buy lots and lots because you will regret it if you dont! Lots of families make it and each is a bit different. Vladimir makes a
pomegranate wine too that is pretty neat and his mom makes very nice macrame things! I like to buy from a few different families to spread the pesos
around.

We got there too late - to do much, but will go back soon to see if we can get some of their product.

Every so often I buy a bottle of wine made in San Isidro. Only because I appreciate local food industry - not the wine. Tastes like Manischevitz
(sp). But I like the palmwood corks!

I'm happy to share my wine source in Comondu...oh wait...hmmm...i wonder if I pass this on if they wont have any left for me when I go up there????
The family at the Tecate store at the entrance to town has most excellent wine and other stuff too...tell them Shari & Juan from Asuncion say
hola. Or Gastelum, the palm furniture maker has great stuff too as does their neighbour Vladimir and his mom.

I didn't pay much attention to the town entrances when we went through late yesterday.

Just so mistakes are not made, the road to the southeast of Comondu which meets with the road to San Javier is 45 km of rocky torture. And I would
like to know how it survived the hurricane this year.
The road directly north to San Isidro is also known to be quite rugged.
I suspect the road to the northeast of Comondu which eventually leads to the highway south of Bahia Concepcion is also rocky and rugged but I have
only traveled on the portion out of San Isidro to the east.
Has anyone got current conditions on these roads? Do I need a new thread to find out.....

They say the Baja 1000 route is better than the roads going out of Comondu.
And those roads are usually pretty torn up. . . so who knows.

We took the road from south of Bahia Concepcion to San Ysiidro about 3 or 4 years ago. Driving a Nissan 4wd pick-up, it was slow tedious, and some
spots wee almost impassable. The short way, from San Jose to Rancho Viejo north of San Javier, which we did 5 or 6 years back, was worse. Neither
has been repaired since our trips. The road that goes through San Javier, past the left side of the church, was badly damaged this summer. Driving
to Agua Escondido last week was arduous, and even when that road is in good condition it is much longer than it looks.
The fastest way from Loreto to Comondu is by hwy 1 through Insurgentes, then up the paved highway to Fancisco Villa, and on to Comondu. Domingo, of
Domingo's Place in Loreto said that the pavement is finished from FV all the way now, and the only dirt stretch is between the two towns. No
potholes, all a smooth ride.
I would so much rather get there by a picturesque backroad, but right now it would require the patience of 2 saints, Jose and Miguel, to go other than
by Highway. Maybe their blessings too
