Here it is...again;
------------------------

-------------------------

WHY DO WE REALLY CELEBRATE "CINCO"

History gives us the Battle of Puebla to commemorate an otherwise
inconsequential turning point in Mexico's war against French forces, but Mexico
is among the last to see the occurrence as worthy of wide spread celebration.
More often, they view it as a non-event.

A more probable inspiration for this week of cross-border debauchery, as it was
meant to be in it's inception, was the international yacht race from Newport
Beach, California, to Ensenada, BCN.
The event was a yearly fiesta for boaters and landlubbers alike who planned a
trip south with the idea in mind to party 'til the lights went out......which,
of course, we did.
The Bahia Hotel was the center of official race activities, trophy presentations
and dinners, while Hussongs was the heart and soul of the hellish behavior that
accompanies excessive, unrestricted partying.

Year after year, the party called "Cinco", for it's traditional date of "Cinco
De Mayo," grew in popularity as well as attendance, and in Newport, displaced
even the Fourth of July in importance on the party calendar. It had become a
local tradition.

Well....it didn't remain a local tradition for long. Advertisers picked up on
the attraction and soon the term "Cinco" was being applied to everything
associated with summer fun away from the watchful eyes of home. Cinco had
advanced from tradition to institution.

The race still happens yearly, although the date may be only near Cinco De Mayo,
and the debauchery has been regulated to an allowable level, but the inspiration
for "Cinco' remains. It's party time.

[These thoughts are mine alone, so if you disagree,......well.....]

Here's some background on the yacht race:

Nice summation of Cinco de Mayo, Dennis. Didn't know the yachter tie-in. I remember the El Bahia as a kid, when it was the place to stay in Ensenada. We never did, couldn't afford it.

There most certainly is but one side to every story: the TRUTH. Variations of it are nothing but lies.

Well, Nobody Who Celebrates Cinco de Mayo

Is looking for a history lesson.

It is just a socially accepted occasion to have fun in public and maybe get s-faced (or otherwise impaired) at the same time without societal disapproval...i.e., Saint Patrick's Day (especially in Chicago), the Puerto Rico Day Parade in New York and my especial pet peeve is the (alleged) adults who took over Halloween, amongst many others including but not limited to tailgate parties at football games and NASCAR races.

We had a great Mexican Buffet

I drove down early from the US today and met a good friend of mine for brunch at Baja Mama's...Paty was cooking, and Paty makes THE best Mexican food around. My friend is from New Jersey and New Jerseyans are tough, critical people when it comes to judging good food (just ask The Sopranos!!). Anyway, I said Hello to my friend Will and I didn't recognize the ladies he was with, and asked him who they were...they I suddenly realized it was Linda Lou all dolled up with her hair done, of course I hadn't seen her in many months...she looked great...I was a mess running down to meet my friend in time...but I am sure Linda Lou will concur about the great cooking...which it seems now that Baja Mama will have once a month Sunday Mexican Buffet...
