suggestions for mainland Mexico heat escape trip?
am wanting to escape the heat for a bit mid-July to mid-August. would like to do some colonial towns; I lived in San Miguel de Allende for a couple
of years and pretty much covered the surrounding areas. did an Oaxaca escape a few summers ago. would like something colonial with museums, etc.
any suggestions, including must see's and where to stay?
reality\'s never been of much use out here...

Pátzcuaro
I would love to spend some time again in this little Colonial city. It has been over 20 years since our last visit. Many museums are close to the
center of town. Paula bought some shawls there that she is still wearing, great shopping according to her. It sits on a lake with pine and cedar
trees. 10 miles distant is the town of Santa Clara del Cobre, home to artists that make pots and all things copper. One lasting memory was a walk
through this town in early morning and the sound of ping, ping, ping, copper being worked into various shapes. All the shops were closed, the noise
was from studios not visible but within ear shot.
We stayed in a little hotel near the plaza, the name I cant remember. At 7200 it should be very comfortable.

San Cristobal de las Casas is about 7000 feet so it is not hot or humid...with many things to do around the area...

Morelia...stunning...and from there you can explore Patzcauro, Santa Clara del Cobre and the myriad of charming towns in the surrounding area. Hotel
Virrey de Mendoza is gorgeous and right in the historic center. Just thinking about it makes me want to return

A few years ago we traveled quite a few colonial towns.
Since you already know the Allende/Queretaro area, may I suggest the towns north of there. Durango, Freshnillo and Zacatecas.
All are above 7000ft, with the last one going over 9000.
Zacatecas especially is a very pretty town. Downtown hotel
Argento Inn highly recommended. Reasonable and right in the heart of town.

I second all of the above. Those are some of our very favorite places in Mexico. Except we have not enjoyed Durango as we did many, many years ago.
If you do go to Pátzcuaro, be sure to see the Tzintzutzan Ruins. The people in this area were one of the groups in Mexico who were never conquered by
the Aztecs.
It is definitely way past time for another trip to the mainland. Hope to hear about where you go, pictures and all.

There were many, many indigenous tribes not conquered by the Aztecs......

Unless you consider 80 degrees F (27 C) hot Guadalajara area is a good option for Jul/Aug.

The cities of Guanajuato (6,600 ft) and Zacatecas (8,000 ft). Very colonial and not many touristas.

Higher is cooler! Drove through Zacatecas in 1971, I think I remember my ears popping! LOL

Zacatecas is nice, but I have heard that there is a lot of cartel activity there now.
