Very different mountains.
A few minutes up the road to the west, there are the Sierras
On the other side just a few minutes up the road there are the Inyos
And there we are stuck at the bottom in between.
Probably won't be back in Baja until after the first of the year --- so much to keep exploring.
BTW--- these were taken hand-held with the Sony Nex6 and the kit lens. Still experimenting, but it sure is easier to carry around!

Yep, that's one big 'rift' valley. Both the Inyo/Whites to the east, and the Sierra to the west, tower to close to 14,000 feet with Owens Valley
between them at around 4000 feet + - .
------God's country for sure.

Thanks KaceyJ. I know we are biased, but we think California has it all. 
Mexitron --- just be prepared as we are having more thundershowers than usual! In the Whites, if you are headed off road, do check with someone first
as roads have been damaged and not repaired yet, roads like the Wyman Canyon road. I just heard today that the Saline Valley road is still closed.
 I look forward to hearing about anywhere you go and seeing lots of photos!
Barry, well yes, it is god's country whoever he she or it may be.  You
know how much we love it, and we know how much you love it! We laugh a bit about the idea of 4000 feet. Someone has their signs a bit mixed up. ON
the main highway north of Big Pine it says 4000 feet and one drops just a tiny bit in elevation and the sign right in Big Pine says 4000 feet. Then
when we drive up 168 a fair distance it says 4000 feet and we are looking down on Big Pine.

From those beautiful clear images it looks like you are south of any smoke that may spill over from the Yosemite fire, yes?

For the most part yes. We have had a bit of smoke from the Rim fire on days, and some more from a fire south of us, but for the most part we have
been very lucky and are not smokey.

Anyone else notice that when you're heading towards Vegas on the I 15 you climb uphill out of Baker for about 10 miles to Hollering Summit which shows
an elevation of 4,026 ft. From there you drop downhill (I've even tried coasting to prove it) for about 5 miles and the sign shows the elevation is
4,000 ft. I believe it's closer to 2,000 ft at that point and that Calltrans altimeter must have been broken when they posted it.

Glad we live where there are few of those inhabitants. It is amazing how many people who have lived in California all their lives have no idea where
this area is and know nothing about it. That is a good thing.
Of course, many do know about this area and boy, are we glad the Labor Day weekend is almost over and they will be headed back south.
Crazy weather this year with all the thundershowers that are not only in the mountains, but are hitting down here in the valley.
Here were the gathering storm clouds last night in our back yard!
Russ, I do like the camera and when we are hiking, my neck especially prefers the little Sony over the big Cannon.
