PACHICO NEEDS HELP - LAGUNA SAN IGNACIO
Sad news Nomads, I received an email from Jesus Mayoral (Pachico's son) this evening as I'm sure many of you may have. Apparently Pachico of Pachico's
Eco Tours and icon of Baja whale watching had a stroke and his family is asking for help. Thought I'd post it here for widest dissemination.

We’re sure you are aware of the important role that Pachico Mayoral has played in introducing Gray whales to the people who love them. Pachico has
fought for the whales you all know and love. Now, he is fighting the hardest battle of his life.
If it wasn’t for Pachico, gray whale watching and research would not be what it is today. When Pachico reached out and touched that one whale, the
lives of so many were changed for the better. Pachico has never asked for anything in return. He is a giver - And has enjoyed putting the joy on the
faces of so many.
Unfortunately, he now needs something from all of us. He needs our help. On October 17, 2013, Pachico suffered a stroke. Fortunately, Pachico was
not alone when his stroke occurred. His family was able to rush him to the hospital to begin the necessary medical care. When they exhausted the
resources of that hospital, the family moved Pachico to La Paz, where he has been getting the medical care necessary for his recovery. After moving
to the hospital in La Paz, Pachico was overjoyed to see, and visit with, so many friends and family. It really buoyed his spirits to experience such
an outpouring of love. If the love of his family and friends was enough, he would already be healed. Unfortunately, he still has a long road ahead
of him.
On the evening of October 20, 2013, the doctors made the decision that Pachico needed rest to combat the swelling in his brain. Though Pachico is now
in a medically induced coma, his vital signs indicate he can feel the loving touch of family members and can hear their voices. In fact, the coma has
already caused Pachico's vital signs to improve as of the morning of October 21. Doctors and family are encouraged and believe that Pachico can fight
his way past this critical part and on to the road to recovery.
Hospital care is expensive. Working for a small family business, Pachico does not have healthcare. Pachico’s Eco Tours, and the entire Mayoral
family, is seeking donations to help defray the costs of Pachico’s medical care. The ambulance ride, the doctor’s bills and the medical tests have
all started to add up… And this is all before the end of his hospital stay. We wouldn’t ask, but we have nowhere else to turn. Pachico’s Eco Tours
is currently pouring its resources into Pachico’s medical care. In order for the family business to survive this nightmare, Pachico needs assistance.
Every donation – big and small - helps Pachico with his recovery. Thank you for considering our request and giving your donation. Pachico Mayoral is

How can you donate? We wanted to make sure everyone had a way that would work best for them to donate. Since we are located in Baja, we decided the
best way to accept donations would be via our tried-and-true method of deposit system. This is the same system we have in place for receiving money
for deposits. Please take a look at the methods we have provided below.

PayPal payment to us without first receiving a request from our account.

Western Union:
United States: If you would like to use this option please use any of Western Union’s convenient locations (supermarkets, convenience stores, etc.)
where you can pay by cash or debit card. You will need to fill out the “Send Money to Mexico” form including this information. Please use the “Next
Day” option as the fee is less than choosing to send “Money in Minutes”.

Western Union will give you a transaction number that we will need in order to receive your payment. Please email us this number and the name of the
person who sent the payment. You can also use this number online to view whether the payment has been picked up by us. We will send a confirmation
email letting you know we have received payment.
**Please do not use Western Union Online Payments as this requires a phone call from both parties to confirm the transaction. We use our mobile phone
for emergencies only.
Already in Mexico? Use Telecom: Visit your local Telecom office where you can send a transfer to:

Telecom will give you a transaction number that we will need in order to receive your payment. Please email us this number and the name of the person

PayPal eCheck & Credit Card:
We accept eChecks and it is a great and inexpensive way to transfer funds to us.
An eCheck is a payment that you make directly from your bank account. Just like a regular check, it usually takes between 3 and 5 business days for
an eCheck to clear and the money to appear in our PayPal account. To send an eCheck, just link your bank account to your PayPal account.
Linking your bank account is easy and fast. If you do online banking, you can usually link your bank account in just a few minutes. Once you’ve
linked your bank, using it to pay is secure. As a merchant we get paid but never see your bank account details or even what bank you use.
We accept PayPal Credit Card payments:
We will send you a money request through PayPal to your email address. The email you will receive from them has instructions on how to pay with a
credit card. Most customers find it quite simple. If they ask for an address use the address that your credit card has on file. We have had two
problems in the past where the funds were put on hold through PayPal and then after review returned to the traveler. We believe this was because the
address on file did not match.
Bank of America–Counter Credits:
We are able to accept payments to our Bank of America account.

One might think that Pachico would have Seguro Popular......at least, I would hope so.
Is that not the case?
I'm starting to get the impression that, for the majority of Mexicans in Mexico, a serious medical issue is a harbinger of doom, and health care is
only for the wealthy.

Once their FaceBook page is up and running (they have a lot on their plates at the moment), they will be giving updates on Pachico. It will probably
be easier for them to post in one place, rather than answer the same question for each person who asks. It seems like a great way for them to handle
the well wishes and questions about Pachico. He is loved and known by so many!
I know Pachico and the family will appreciate all healing thoughts. I also think it might take a while to answer each individual in addition to
making sure Pachico is cared for and answering reservation requests for the 2014 whale watching season.
Pachico's is a small company, and Jesus has been running the company for many years now. The core of this company is strong and will weather this
storm. In spite of Pachico's stroke, this company will be around for many, many years to come. And they will continue to follow the path that
Pachico has paved.

gracias Sunman for helping the family in need out. Pachico has many friends and fans and I'm confident that Nomads will help out too....I sent them an
email about a papal donation....although it sure would be easier to just donate directly for most people if they or someone set up a paypal account
for this.
We are sending him healing prayers in hopes of a full recovery.

Sad news indeed. All the Mexicans here where I am (a convention in La Paz) were shocked at the news and tell me that none of the people from La Laguna
have insurance. That is something that should be changed.

I thought Seguro Popular was available for everybody.

Seguro Popular is available to everybody, but you gotta sign up. It's a good idea to sign up ahead of time, and to facilitate that each county's
intake officers make annual visits to many of the outlying pueblos.
Problem is, this insurance doesn't cover much. Very limited medications, excludes many treatments and laboratory analysis , limited doctors' fees; it
certainly won't cover ambulance transport.
I'm almost certain it's been made available retroactively to this good man when he arrived to a Seguro Popular hospital. There are social workers who
create a file for each new patient. It was stated that he's now in La Paz which indicates he's in Hospital Salvatierra.
The family has respectfully reached out. Let's help.

Hospital Salvatierra is the big new medical facility in La Paz serving Seguro Popular patients
in Baja California Sur.
I'm sorry that Pachico left this world, but I'm grateful for having had the opportunity to whale watch with him and his family.
The medical expenses incurred by his brief illness are still outstanding.
Additionally, there are now further expenses of the funeral.
We can still help defray those costs and lighten the family's burden of this good man's leaving.

Greetings - I am a friend of the Mayoral family. The family does have many outstanding bills due to Pachico's brief illness. He was originally seen
in Santa Rosalia, but they soon exhausted the resources of that facility. At that point, the family had to get an ambulance for Pachico to take him
to La Paz.
Pachico was at Salvatierra, but the neurologist that had to be called in was not from that hospital. Additionally, Pachico underwent many expensive
tests. The costs far exceed anything Seguro Popular would cover. The family did everything they absolutely could to give Pachico the best possible
outcome. Unfortunately, that was not enough.
Yes, and now there are funeral expenses. Hearts are broken all over the world today. We lost a good one. Pachico's spirit will live on at the
lagoon - through his children and grandchildren. They will continue his tradition and manner with the whales. He taught us all so very much.
Family who visited Pachico this weekend were met with that wonderful Pachico smile - the one that lit up his eyes and his whole face. He held his
loved ones and was held in return. Later, even after the medically induced coma, his vital signs would steady and improve when he heard the voices of
loved ones. His family sang to him and they knew he heard them. He was not alone. He was able to give his love to his family and he felt the love
in return.

RIP Jose Francisco Pachico Mayoral
Condolences to family and friends.
I recall a passage in the book Eye of The Whale where the author describes being introduced to Pachico as the first to have 'hand to whale' contact.
The rest is history. I guess he is the Original Whale Whisperer.

I am so sorry to hear this. Having recently had a stroke myself, I now sit here and count my blessings.
