I often wonder the same thing. When we were kids we had a short stint in Eureka and would travel east on holiday weekends and pan the Trinity river. The memories of camping, panning, fishing along this river are great and I've always wanted to give it another shot. I've read Hermans book a handful of times and feel like I'm him living these adventures. Maybe that's why I'm hooked watching Gold rush. The thrill of the hunt of hitting a vein or finding nugget keeps my dream alive of doing it again. I just got to do it. Really isn't that hard. But I have lots of dreams.

When it rained we could go out and pick up tiny gold nuggets where the rain had washed the earth away. However, we never became rich!

My problem is digging. In old wash arroyos. In "The likely places".

Going down four to six feet to find gold bearing material. I still have a gold pan, but a sluice (where's the water?) with miner's moss. followed by panning will yield gold if that damned first six feet of sand and silt gets removed.
