Global Connections

This may be a hard-to-follow report, but if you want, you can stay to the end with me.

Years ago, hubby and I were regular customers at a sushi bar in Costa Mesa, CA, that was owned by a guy that had made a lot of money building skyscrapers in Japan.

He imported several sushi chefs from home (fugu special dinner nights, anyone?)

He also imported his girlfriend to work at the restaurant - she loved him, but knew that it was a doomed relationship, because he had a wife back at home in Tokyo.

She also loved our family and taught our daughters how to play "Go", the ancient game of war using stones on a playing board that some people say came before the invention of chess.

She married a farmer in Northern California. They moved to Africa taking on a mission to advise the local people about sustainable farming practices.

I just received a Facebook message from her, a report on their vacation trip, hiking in the snow in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.
