Car hijacking
Not sure if I am posting this in the correct forum so if incorrect please feel free to move or delete. I received an email from the person that runs
MexicoRVForums. I believe he is dependable and not one to spread rumors. He said he heard from a long time friend that (last week) their Blue Jeep was
hijacked at gunpoint on Hwy 200 near Mazatlan. The incident happened about a week ago. His friend was using the Jeep as a tow car and it was being
towed at the time of the hijacking. In addition to losing the car he had important papers in that car. His recommendation was to scan documents ie
passports, insurance policies, tourist cards, temporary vehicle imports etc and to email them to yourself so in the unlikely event your car is
stolen/hijacked you'll be able to access copies of the documents.

I misquoted the area. The hijacking was in Michoacán south of Manzanillo on Hwy 200. The email also mentioned getting SpotTrace which is a device that
when hidden anywhere where there isn't medal between the device and the sky sends position every 5 minutes when moving and every 30 minutes
thereafter. It costs $99 and $99/year. Personally I have always felt that if my car got stolen I would prefer insurance money to retrieval but guess
that would depend upon the condition of what is retrieved.

Hm... that still doesn't compute. Manzanillo is in Colima, not Michoacán, and it's 90 km from the Michoacán border (and 45 km from Jalisco).

I read about this as it happened...and then this follow-up from the victims of the car-jacking. Terrible news for RVers and any tourist.

OK, retracting my previous statement—but if you're going to post a link, it helps to make your statement believable.
That said... what a horrible thing to have happen. It definitely can happen anywhere, and they did the right thing—it's just a car.

Michoacan has been in the news lately as one of the areas where vigilantes are waging war against cartels. Is it even advised for gringo tourists to
be in that area?

No, but ninety-nine out of a hundred gringos couldn't pick out Michoacán on a map of Mexico, much less the Tierra Caliente where the issues are most
concentrated. The entire state save Morelia and Lázaro Cárdenas is under a non-essential travel warning. So is Morelos, though, and I'm going there on
Wednesday.
