Loreto Report

Sorry about the above error---just getting old. Anyway, I just returned from a month in Loreto.Wind blew just about everyday (so what else is new) and the fishing was so-so. Nacho Quintero of Nacho's Sportfishing (tel. # 135 09 56) was fishing at Pulpito last weekend and brougt back 80 kilos of yellowtail. Most were over 20 lbs. Also, there were a few dodos still around and the water is still warm. He was commercial fishing in his superpanga and had two friend onboard with him. Got some really nice cabrilla too. Water was flat and calm. We had some rain while I was there. This year has been a wierd one weatherwise. Well, the election for a new President of the Pueblo is coming up fast now and it looks like a race between Ramon Davis Drew and Senor Rury--should be interesting. Maybe its just Loreto, but it seems like the day after the election, they start campaigning for the next one. They are always voting for something in Loreto---or is it all over Mexico like that? Ex President Tony Verdugo has started a business selling real estate and helping with fidiocomisos. He is on the corner accross the street from the Marcado Pescador. According to the pangeros, last summer was a bust. No Gringos and not a lot of fish. All business was slow. Such great people and such a special town, why not plan now to get down to Loreto. They could use your business. MiraMar reminds me of Phoenix, Arizona, the way it keeps growing and growing. Colonia Zarigozsa has two new blvds. that are being paved with a center divider and full city lighting and planting in the medium. Also, heard the pueblo is planning on putting two dams up in the arroyo to hold the rain water and provide recreation---plus maybe make a little electricity too. Damn good idea if they do it. Down in Tripui, there is construction going on as about half the old tenants are rebuilding their places. This time it will be permanent structures and (hopefully) no more palm roofs. In spite of the slow season with the tourists the people seem to be doing very well with lots of new trucks and cars being driven around. Lastly, the old trawler in the marina (the Nayrit) has been moved out of the marina and sits on a lot in town. I don't know where the pelicans will go to poop now as that must have been one of their favorite spots. Lots of building going on aside from the Bahia Loreto. I guess the beginning of the baby boomers retirements is starting now. Get on down to Loreto and see for yourself. I can't think of a finer place to spend time.:D

this past june i took my son on an unexpected detour into loreto (low on $ and finally found the atm at the bank!). sadly, it was my first time exploring loreto since we are usually coming or going somewhere else and the only stops are for fuel. that said, loreto IS beautiful! i wish we had the time to explore a little deeper. but hey, there's always next time. or the time after that. or....

Gracias

His business seems to be doing okay. The politicos have a weekly meeting there. Hey, I finally got my Myers Manx running. Adrian (behind the El Nido) was really helpfull and reasonable. I was originally referred to that guy in Mira Mar. Just the brakes cost an arm and a leg. The guy thinks he is in Montana all the time. Junior, I believe, is his name. Haven't seen you guys down there is quite some time. I will be back in middle of January.

I was down in November for the Baja Mil, and hang around for Thanksgiving with some friends in town. Great weather (on the beach), and plenty of food to go around!
Should be back down in Feb:spingrin:

I was out fishing today, off Punta Perico with Manuel Torres. We did very well, with nine yellowtail (and three hammerhead sharks). Weather was nice, too. Here's a link to Allcoast with a couple of pics:

http://www.allcoastsportfishing.com/forum/dcboard.php?az=sho...

Our neighbor was a candidate for mayor but lost in the primary to Cancino, who they now assure me will win in a landslide. :) Other friends are not so sure. :) I try to stay out of local politics, mostly successfully, while my wife has been to a few events. Democracy is amazing here-lots of energy and participation.

We have two kids and a grandaughter visiting in a week, we were hoping the Malecon rebuild would be done, but it doesn't look like it. They're getting close, though. And sorry to see that old boat leave the harbor. It even stayed there and survived the storms last year. Anyone want to buy an unsinkable, indestructable boat/guano mine? :)

Guadalupe Day today, firecrackers last night.

Ah, what a great town.

Don

Uh, which pangueros were you talking to se?ior? Last summer was probably the busiest I've seen in several years. Not only did I see a banner year but so did all the others- on many days EVERY single boat that could float went out. Empty marina and fishermen still waiting in line be the next to go out. Haven't seen that in quite a long time. Weird weather after TS Blas in mid July but it recovered. Need to realize that nature has a tendency of running in cycles. Loreto is alive and well, coming out of the dark ages and entering a renaissance.

Which Pangeros

I am sure you are right, Pam. However, many different pangeros told me it was slow this summer. Most were not part of your independent pangero program. I tried to answer your U2U but can't seem to get my end to work. At any rate---good or bad---we need to get more tourists to come to see the wonders Loreto has to offer. I do have a great picture of Nacho and Dina at our Thanksgiving feast and will try to send it to you. The older I get the more difficult the computer becomes. Hey, I did see your coffee and cuppicino signs and meant to stop in for some caffine pickup. Just plain old ran out of time.

U2U's

Hi there,

I got your U2U, well you sent me mine back anyway.. you can just bring some photos in and I'll scan them and hand them right back. Only takes a few minutes. Nacho doesn't have any of himself with fish. I have a few of his boats though and the captain he was using last year (Rigo). See you next time and I'll try and save some coffee fer ya.
