Deep, Deep, "Deep Sea Fishing"
Went out today and did some deep drop fishing using electric reels and 5 lb. weights
That's meters on the line counter
Got some nice shortraker rockfish
And my personal favorite eating fish, black cod. These fish were all caught at about 1400 feet.
Has anyone tried this kind of deep fishing in Baja?

I guess I'm reading "meters" on the reel. Never been that deep. Down to 650 FEET is all I've done!

Thanks for the article, I had no idea
what the record was. We were targeting black cod and ended up catching 3 large shortrakers, the largest was 35lbs. We saved the otoliths so we can
date the fish.

Electric reels are illegal in Mexico without a permit, only available to disabled fishermen. Could be pricy if you get caught.

Good to know, I suppose one could do it with conventional tackle, but the arm would get pretty tired from
cranking 200 fathoms of line. It would be pretty interesting to see what lives at those depths in Baja, though.

it's fascinating to think that these fish live for 200 years - can't ever imagine wanting to target such a long-lived creature. much more exciting to
think they damn fish will out live us all if left unmolested!

Insane depths ! Round 200 m for me and not there.
Do they fish like that commercially there ?

The longline black cod fishery is pretty big here, it brings a good price. It's especially popular in Japan.

I love this place, but I'm getting a bit homesick, and a little tired of the rain. I guess
that June was the rainiest on record, and we've had close to a foot already in July, I'm about ready for some fishing in our tropical waters. You
should come and visit some time, there's a whole group of Sitkans in Todos Santos.

I agree, I wouldn't purposely target them,
and would have released them but their swim bladders expand so much when they are cranked from that depth, it fatally injures them. They actually
float the 5# weight to the surface the last 100 or so feet.

Actually Greg, I go through Pescadero 3 or 4 times a year on horse vet clinics with Liz. I just always figure you guys are so busy. . . .
I was born and raised in Sitka = Actually born in the Pioneer Home because there was no hospital for white people - only the Bureau of Indian Affairs
hospital on Mt. Edgecumbe - - and left when I discovered SUNSHINE and ROADS.
Still related to much of the oldtimer town.
Spent summers at Baranof Hot Springs, etc.

I noticed that sunrise is at 4am this morning in Fairbanks. <yawn>
You got me worried about the rain comments. We are going up north in august. I like the rain. Camping in it kinda sucks. It's the transition from rain
gear to dry that causes the most angst.
On the positive side - the salmon runs should be good. And you get the best pictures in that sort of light.
