A Rosarito Christmas story

CRREAD is a Mexican nonprofit substance addiction rehabilitation organization. They have, according to my best understanding, 23 facilities and 6500 ?internos? throughout Mexico.

An interno comes from any walk of life, from 12-year-old TJ prostitutes (female and male) up to and including federal court judges.

As the drug wars go on and the borders tighten, Mexico, with a rapidly expanding middle class with disposable income, is becoming an end user location for the cartels.

There is no substantive governmental or institutional organized support for nonprofit institutions and no effective subsidized programs for the exploding drug use problem.

CRREAD takes anyone, regardless of ability to pay. We have seen 15-year-old wives/mothers arrive in a taxi to deliver the addicted husbands for treatment, and the wives/mothers don?t have any money for the return fare. The guys at the gate will take up a collection amongst themselves at that point.

Every Christmas, the CRREAD in Rosarito hosts a party for the children in the community.

We volunteered to provide the 1500 drinks needed.

I called Wal-Mart in San Diego to make sure that they could supply such a large amount. The assistant manager said of course, it just takes three days to ship from the central warehouse. She asked me some questions about what I was doing, and I was happy to explain.

That was it, she assured me that the drinks would be there, just call ahead.

When we arrived to pick up the 1500, there was an additional 500, contributed by the Wal-Mart employees, 2000 in all.

The party was a great success.

Merry Christmas to all who love Baja and the people.

Don't you understand that Walmart is now being branded as an EVIL enteprise by the left in the United States.
I cry when I think of the wonderful Mexicans who have been turned into drugies who care about nothing. As I remember it all started way back in the '60's.
So sad--but glad someone is putting their thumb in the dyke.

Yes, Bernie

You get the point of my story exactly.

I took a lot of introductory space to explain about CRREAD,

but what Wal-Mart did for them is the payoff.

No one at Wal-Mart asked for credentials or verification. When I called to check on the drinks, the voice answering the phone immediately said, "Oh, you're the lady helping the orphans!"

No one at Wal-Mart asked for credit or thanks, the extra contribution was just there.

Nothing is as it seems, if you are hearing things third hand (media or otherwise).

Always look below the surface and be grateful for the innate goodness in most people.

Best to you,

Gypsy Jan
