I used to not have arachnophobia but I'm thinking of changing

SWMBO, who I've taken plenty of liberties with on these pages, has turned the tables big time. She made the following post on her Facebook page and the responses from what I thought were friends has been non-stop. Brutal.

For the strong of heart! Read no further if you don't want to have an image stuck in your brain. You've been warned! We just returned from our place down in Baja, Bahia de Los Angeles. Well, I was in the front room and Jim went in to take a shower. I heard screaming, and "Shirley, get the broom!" Which of course I did. Went in to the bathroom and there Jim was, standing on the toilet, stark naked, screaming give me the broom. A spider, I think like the one pictured, was on the back side of the shower curtain, scared the sh*t out of Jim! And the poor spider probably had a heart attack, too, it is a harmless, but large spider, I would have screamed, too. Lesson well learned, never get in the shower without checking the shower curtain. And that image of Jim on the toilet, screaming is still stuck in my head!!!!!!

For some reason, I don't think it's a photo of the spider that most folks were hoping to see...that other image is probably burned into SWMBO's memory for eternity.

In Africa the word is-
If they are on the wall or ceiling they're OK. If they are on the floor, they are made dead.
Different kinds for different places.

Ahhh...Jim...yes, that image of you screaming like a little girl buck nekid got a chuckle out of me this lovely morning. A couple nights ago Juan wakes me up and shoves his leatherman tool at me and says look...when my sleepy eyes began to focus there was an enormous tarantula staring at me...seriously? I understand our bobcat was toying with it in the kitchen...great news.

We usually see those hairy buggers in the daytime a couple days before a rain but I guess they come out to dine at night and kitty wanted a playmate...hopefully she brought him in and there isnt some nest of em in a cupboard!

Maybe a camel spider? They're huge and scary.

For a Halloween thrill, google the "Goliath Spider"... world's largest, as big as a small puppy. Makes tarantulas look like midgets. None in Baja that I know of.... yet... mmmoooohhhaahahahahahahahaaaaaa...

Shari...no problem with a nest of tarantulas in your cupboard. They nest in burrows in the ground. Generally the males are walking around this time of year looking for a mate, and are about 16-18 years old. This is the end of their lifespan, so have pity on them. Females usually wait in the burrows, and they live about 25 years. Amazing primitive spiders, they cause no harm except to frighten people. For 30 years in jr. high science classes I had students freely handle them with no bites. They do flick abdominal hairs off their body for protection. These hairs are barbed and irritating. That's why many tarantulas are bare on the top of the abdomen.

I'm on Jim's side. We have some of the same spiders here in So. AZ. Two different times have had nearly the same thing happen. Before we built the screened porch we would sit outside in a screened camping shelter. One day I unrolled a rolled screen siding and there was a huge tarantula. About that time a road runner was on the wall and saw it. When I jumped back the roadrunner jumped off the wall and came towards the tarantula. He then jump up and snatched the tarantula off the screen perfectly. Forever a friend of Roadrunners! Next time was just last week when I was driving my Jeep back from the hills when a large Wolf Spider (looks like the Camel spider and maybe the same) came sliding down out of my dash as I am driving down the road. Panic! Trying to decide to pull over to kill when it retreated back into the dash. I drove the rest of the way home just knowing he was going to drop out of the dash at any moment on my feet. Got home, closed the windows on the top and let off a bug bomb. Let it set overnight. Next day sprayed Spider Bug Killer under dash & firewall inside. Then moved outside and sprayed the firewall from the engine compartment. Still have not driven the Jeep since. Some us just down like SPIDERS!

[Waking up one morning at Coyote Bay, I once found a big black tarantula in my tennis shoe. Good thing I always shake them out first. I carried the brute outside and sent it on it's way. Looking back, I think it would have been a great pet.

On the other hand, when found in the house, black widows get squished....along with brown recluses.]

Aha...finally found the perp's photo. I know what Santiago went through. Even though this guy is relatively harmless...it still gets your heartbeat going early in the morning.
