Seriously, I think its awesome you guys are enjoying the AFe intakes. Just a few things to consider before dropping that much cash. Or at least what I
consider. To me it seems like a gimmick...
Don't you think that Toyota would have engineered their intake to be the most efficient? Having 5mpg increase on the sticker would increase sales
dramatically. Having extra 20hp would too.
Mathematically, how would the engine benefit from a cone filtered intake? The drag difference between stock and AFE is negligible (assumption).
If it were a true cold air intake, I could see it increasing power, but not MPG. Stoichiometric ratio of fuel and air do not change. If your pulling
in more air, your engine will inject more fuel. (Colder denser air would thus require more fuel, but increase your power, potentially).
I feel that a larger intake like the AFe would only be beneficial if you were to combine that with a larger diameter intake tube, Mass/Volume Air flow
meter, butterfly valve/Throttle body, higher flow injectors and possibly a chip to retard timing.
Basically I'm saying is that the engine is calibrated to suck in a certain amount of air, and it in itself is the bottle neck. Its like putting on a
fire hose on your home spigot...?

think you have a point if we were to compare a new factory air cleaner with the AFE, the paper filter that was standard on my truck did not have
nearly the amount of surface area as the AFE, and living in the dusty environment here in BCS, I would need to change out that expensive filter often
to maintain optimum performance, whereas with the AFE, I can simply remove it, wash it out with soap and water, spray new oil on it and I'm good to
go.

Agree completely with Boojum Man. If it was that easy to get that kind of increase in performance and efficiency, Toyota would have already done it.

agree.
i suspect that aftermarket air filter system probably voids your warranty, so be careful if you still have warranty on engine. perhaps only add such
after warranty expires?

All I know is that I drove with a full tank from Tustin, CA, and made it to Ensenada via Tecate, and then returned via Tecate to Tustin and still had
some gas left over when I filled up at Costco on Jamboree.
I have never been able to do that before.
Tail wind to and from the border?
I don't know.
I am not a salesperson for aFe, and my original comments were directed at DK regarding my house for sale.
You guys want to argue about the aFe air filter system, be my guest.
I'll just start another thread about the house for sale!

Yup, and if it get's ugly and political enough, it can get locked up.
But seriously, if I didn't have some personal medical interventions in process, I'm looking into a southern relocation just like this. And if those
interventions take, I'm definitely needing an environment that puts me into this market.
Best of luck with your property Udo......
