South Dakota plates

I just received the renewal postcard from Clay County, and it looks like they now require a SDakota ID to renew the registration. Does anyone have the scoop on this? Gracias!

You might give America's Mailbox a call. They can fix you up with a PO Box in South Dakota, plus do all the registration, etc. Hope that helps.

I just renewed mine - all you have to do is leave the space blank and send in your payment. No problem at all. I got mine.

I just changed my CA plates to SD on my motorcycle. Have only a CA address. I called them, asked how to do it, they gave me the details and no problem. This was earlier this week, the 22nd, I think. Be sure you let them know you are in Mexico. They might be feeling some heat from CA or TX.

Just go to this site...

https://www.govteller.com/Pay.aspx

..and enter auto info and amount. Then you can pay using credit card and Clay County Treasurer will mail your tags the next day.

If it's a first time, initial registration issue, a phone call to the treasurer is necessary to establish the fee. All vehicles are different.

I've heard US customs gives people a hard time about the SD plates. Is that true? Or is SD registration mainly for cars that don't go back into the states?

I have crossed Northbound with S.D. plates at both TJ and Tecate and have never been questioned about the plates.

I cross at TJ or Tecate every 4-6 weeks and at most get a comment like - "Is no one left in South Dakota?" and we all laugh. I think it is an issue for Sentri, but I don't use Sentri. Don't need it here as crossing times these days are usually 20 minutes or less. SD plates, not a problem.
