Proposal: Pay your taxes or lose your passport

Or maybe it should be: Pay your taxes, keep your passport?

Anyways... this is from: http://www.jetsetter.com/feature/pay-your-taxes-or-lose-your...

This past September, the Department of Homeland Security declared you can no longer fly in the U.S. without a passport in these four states. Now there's this news: According to a Wall Street Journal report, Congress is planning to pass a new law that could deny or retract passports from Americans who haven't paid their taxes, raising roughly $398 million over 10 years.

The good news: The law, which is expected to take effect in January, will only punish those with "seriously delinquent" debt — we're talking a $50,000 minimum of unpaid federal taxes.

The bad news: If you're a U.S. citizen living abroad and don't receive IRS mail (or if you live here but never open your mail box), you could be in trouble.

The exception: Those who are traveling for humanitarian reasons, are on an IRS payment plan, or are contesting a tax case in court don't need to worry.

Bottom line: Pay your taxes, and save yourself the headache.

True, there are those who fly under the radar when it comes to taxes, FMMs etc. Would they owe $50K?

Maybe the feds figure those who (mostly) play by the rules, and have passports & money to travel, are higher income, and justify the IRS expense of going after them.

Yeah, they're threatening not to allow California IDs to board planes starting on January 10th. It'll never actually happen; there's 18 million holders of California IDs and driver licenses. There'd be hangings in effigy if they just 'turned off the tap'.

But even if they do... SENTRI cards are valid to board airplanes with :)

How about corporations that don't pay their taxes? According to Mitt Romney, they're people too.

This whole thing smells of BS. I cannot think of any possible why an American citizen would need a passport to fly domestically.

I would love to now who floated this crap. Not gonna happen. Just BS.
I'm guessing that this is the brainchild some anti-Obama group.

Anyone really think you will need a passport to drive through the Holland Tunnel?

Pure BS!

O, you are wrong, Cappy. Govt can do great things for us people. Look at FDR and programs like SS. LBJ and great society (and Medicare and medicaid). The only thing that stops effective govt are the anti-everything idiots like Cruz and Trump and extremist wing of the GOP, the tools of the bigots and the selfish.

And based on your comment, you should be voting for Bernie

Simple fact is that while I personally embrace much of what Bernie stands for (confession- I was in the Selma march, and actually had tea with Ethel Kennedy at their Georgetown home, and was devastated when Bobby was assassinated), He is first of all too old to last in that demanding job, and second, he will not attract enough independents and centrist to be able to win a general election.

Love her or hate her, Hillary is the only Democrat that can win the general election.
