I remember my first tamale stop there as we climbed the hill and then hit the lonely Pemex. I was in a caravan from the SD Natural History Museum on our way to Mulege where a binational team was doing renovations in the town's museum and organizing educational programs with the local high school.

So, as the newbie on her first lengthy Baja roadtrip, I had no clue what culinary wonders came from that van parked under a solo tree. As you all have shared, Carmelita offers a delicious Baja bounty of treats whether you enjoy the tamales or as Pompano notes the burritos. For my 4 year old daughter's developing palate, she cheerfully offered to make little bean and cheese burritos. Sharing the feelings of motherhood with Carmelita was a very warm and genuine experience as well so I was saddened to hear about her children.

So, it was nice to be reminded of her snack oasis. I wonder how many of the "not in the know" crowd have sped past her van or just gassed up and sized up that van as suspect on quality.....oh what a horrible newbie faux-pas....glad I was with a group "in the know" on my first Carmelita encounter...important Baja road lesson, looks can be deceiving and never judge a book by its cover or a van by its paint job. Now all this Carmelita talk makes me regret that getting to Mulege in April via the Loreto AeroMex flight and not road tripping it!!

Viva Baja was the first sticker I made... 'got baja?' the current one.

I just am not having much luck in getting the second printing from Antonio (who made them in Tijuana), what with the new baby and all.

I have everyone's request, and the envelopes are addressed... as soon as I get them, they will get sent out!
